These lists are all terribly subjective, IMO Henderson should be higher , Penn yes, as despite their H2H records, Hughes title runs back in the day were something else, even though not all of his opponents deserves title shots (Gil Castillo I'm looking at you) a lot of them were as deserving as anybody, Hughes for a long period dominated like no other (I hate Hughes as a person too). I would rank him slightly higher than Wandy yes, but I think tiers leave too much room for error, to say he is an entire TIER or LEVEL above silva isn't accurate either. Now, if we're talking pure skill or talent, then I would have Penn much higher than Hughes
Big Nog's resume is too good for him to be outwith the top tier. He beat every other great hw available to him other than the GOAT.
Pretty much bang on with e Elite's of the sport in terms of greatness .......... Id have Shogun and maybe Rampage amongst the ATG's though , certainly Shogun Based on the manner of some of his victories against top opposition over a long period of time id be tempted to rank Penn in the elite bracket but thats a debate in itself
Big Nog is a great fighter but I'm just not sold on him as being the top 4 or 5. Sure he has a great resume but a huge factor for some of his wins is his ability to absorb punches. He has zero stand up skills which I think takes him out of the list. I'd rank Hendo before Nog. But then again this is just my opinion.
Not really the most insightful comment to begin with, considering you are discussing a greatness list made by another poster on a boxing forum. It is a necessary, inbuilt prerequisite of any list posted on a forum that they are subjective, because they are the opinion of the poster. Pointing this out is like starting with "This list was typed on a keyboard..." Tier One? He never dominated a division the way Anderson or Fedor or GSP did. This was central to my thinking. And his resume is some way short of Nog's, IMO. Still, there is most definitely time for Dan to move up the list, if he keeps going the way he is going. And I hope he does, great fighter. I have Penn and Wandy both fractionally higher than Hughes myself.
I think having Hendo above Nog is valid, I don't agree but it's a fair call. However, I disagree with the comment in red. I think Nog's boxing was solid. He wasn't a KO puncher, but he had skills.
Noguerra is / was a very capable boxer , who has a walk forward pressure style which top level fighters have had problems with , his style was boxer / grappler a bit like Penn (in terms of skill set not style) but just a little less in the arsenal . So to say he has " zero stand up skills " is unfair , and not true
I think Nog in his prime has a better ''boxing'' game than Hendo. He put his combo's together much more fluidly and had better (not great, but we are talking relatively) technique. And Dan's ability to absorb punches is also a big factor in delivering that BIG right hand, which is the only + Id give him over Nog in the stand up department Hendo was able to stay on his feet a bit better than Nog aswell, but too say zero is disingenuous
Fair enough, I would compare Nogs stand up skills with Werdums newly found Muay Thai. Nogs very easy to hit but again he did use enough boxing to keep people honest. Although adequate it definitely is the weakest of the four listed.
IF lets say Big Nog and Hendo is even, which is a fair assessment. In terms of longevity I give the edge to Hendo and also the ability to fight and be effective in different weight classes. His resume I think edges Big Nog. Many people doesnt realize but Bustamante alone may be the best Carlson Gracie student of all.
Even though I'm a Hendo fan, I don't see his resume being better than Nog's, not at all. But as I keep saying every time I mention Hendo being Tier 2, there is still time for him to improve upon his res and make the jump to #1 in my eyes. He's performing very very well these days.
