I tend to think that Pavlik is going to come to this realization if he chooses to continue his career and pursue fights.
He is not ready to fight Bute watch his last fight against Lopez. Pavlik can make more money long term if he keeps winning fights. Short term the Bute fight would have been good money but his stock would go down. Guys like Abraham, Johnson, Froch, Kessler he has a better chance of beating and they are big names also. He don't need to be fighting guys like Bute and Ward right now he is only 29 he can take his time if he wants.
Which is fine, and I don't neccessarily disagree with that. However, what does that have to do with pulling out of Saturday's fight? And keep in mind, all of those guys (except AA) have a better than decent chance of beating Pavlik for less money. If he didn't feel ready for Bute, why didn't he tell Deboef and outprice himself or something? As far as I understand, his team and him ultimately make the decisions (which is why his career seems handled differently than other Top Rank fighters) so he could have avoided the fight altogether during the negotiation stage instead of making an ass out himself.
He is scared of facing Bute. If you were offered 1.35 M$ + 40% of the profits to face a so-called "Glass jawed fraud" then you jump on board. Obviously Pavlik doesn't see Bute that way.
They were struggling to sell 1k tickets in his hometown. Why should he get more then 50k $ for a tune-up?
Saturdays fight was a tune up for Bute since he does not want to fight Bute he does not need the tune up. Pavlik is a multi millionaire why would he spend an evening getting hit in the face for 50k? TThere is also a slight chance he could lose the fight somehow, why take the risk for 50 K? I listened to an interview last night and Pavlik thinks people around him are trying to cash out on him. Pavlik was advised to fight Bute but I think Pavlik slowly came to realize that his chances are very slim in beating Bute. Pavlik does not want to cash out he still want's to be champ. Losing to Bute would only lose him momentum in that goal.
Supposedly, Pavlik is in line to be the mando for the WBC title. So if he wants to go that rout, he'll have to go to England to fight Froch or Oakland to fight Ward.
Well...if you're going by that logic, there was always the minimal(and I mean minimal) chance that Pavlik lost his tuneup and even if he wanted the fight with Bute, it would be gone. The tuneup was something HE said he wanted and repeated several times. 50k +100% (which is obviously more than 50k). That was his choice at the outset, he should have known he wouldn't make huge money fighting a low level tuneup. And if he's worried about losing to Cunningham, then he really has problems. If his tuneup was like a Librado Andrade he'd make more. SO at point was it going to be ok to take the risk? 100k +100% 200K+ 100%? He would be delusional if he thought he was going to make a lot off a weak tuneup. And since you're talking about momentum, you haven't said what momentum he gained by pulling out of Saturday's fight? What momentum do you gain by pissing off TV networks, promoters, managers, and the already dwindling fanbase(struggled to get 1k ticket sales)? What momentum do you gain by pulling out of your 5th fight in about 3 years? What good does it do? He could have just done the fight on Saturday and found a way out of the Bute match later, it happens (and with Kelly, pretty frequently). If he continued on the fight with Showtime and looked spectacular that would have paid greater dividends with that 50K than backing out of that fight.
Cunningham being a southpaw was a good tune up fight for Bute. Since Pavlik does not want to fight Bute anymore why would he fight Cunningham? Pavlik wants to fight Froch he made that much clear in an interview I was watching last night. If thats the case it would make more sense for him to be fighting orthodox fighters right now then southpaws. I think the fact that Pavlik is not fighting Bute anymore makes it a low risk no reward fight. If Pavlik was still planing on fighting Bute Cunningham would be good preperation and worth the work and risk. He has lost a bit of momentum right now but I think its better then losing to Bute. Pavlik still is a pretty famous american fighter so I think he will be able to get fights. If he gets a bit of a win streak going he should have lots of momentum and more confidence plus be less rusty.
He backed out of the deal, because he relaized top rank ****ed him. He figures why does he need top rank anyway? They were going to **** him on the Bute fight.
