Standing up to what? He's the one who demanded the Cunningham fight. How can a recovering (at best) alcoholic without a meaningful win in 3.5 years suddenly decide that a seven-figure payday is insufficient?

Only a world class promoter such as Top Rank could have wrangled that deal in the first place, even getting Showtime — which is kissing Arum's ass these days because of Pacquiao — to creatively schedule a ShoBox on his behalf and dive headlong into a situation with a lot of instability.

Pavlik is some combination of dumb, deluded and drunk.

50K is not much. niether is 1.1 mil. I mean look at it in retrospect. Tom Zbikowski is an NFL safety. He fought on the Cotto vs Mayorga undercard for 50K. and **** that was only his what second pro fight? i mean be fair. Pavlik thought there would be more to gain from this. this is his prime. he needs to maximize it to the best of his ability. I think that the financial part of boxing is often overlooked.

Ignoring everything but the finances, Pavlik just gave away roughly $1.4m in revenue and alienated his fanbase, promoter and television network. There's no economic basis by which to justify his decision to back out of this weekend's fight.

Pavlik is doing the wrong thing and there's no denying that....

What Pavlik doesn't mention and is ESSENTIAL OR CAPITAL to understand why he was paid more to face lesser opposition back then is the HBO MONEY !!!

HBO use to be the ones guaranteeing him with multi-million dollar purses, no matter how many asses he was putting into seats or how much the gate was generating. The gate was almost irrelevant in regards to his guaranteed HBO salary.

This situation is a complete different ball game. SHOWTIME bring about 2 million into the pot and the Bell Centre can hope to generate a gate of approximately 2 million if it's packed for boxing. To that we add Canadian PPV money which isn't anything huge.

Please note that Bute usually attracts on average 15 000 fans that generate less than 1.5 million with the gate itself.

Pavlik's 1.35 million guarantee was based on the numbers they were confident of at least getting, therefore realistic and not optimistic.

Every extra dollar earned, Pavlik gets 40% of that, therefore he can generate much more based on all compiled revenues.

    If it's 4 million = 1.6 million for Pavlik
    If it's 5 million = 2 million for Pavlik

    ....and so on......

Now Pavlik talks about 1.1 guarantee because he deducts TOP RANK's 18% promotional fee off of a 1.35 base salary.

1.35 Mill vs Bute IN MONTREAL is still not enough.

Because you are completely clueless in regards to the real revenues generated...overall and the 40% clause that would earn Pavlik more anyways...

    Read the post above :deal

Kelly needs to lighten up and realise that back then, HBO was guaranteeing his 2 million salary, even if he was fighting in your back yard with no fans in attendance....

Now Kelly was guaranteed 40% of the entire pot. Sorry but if he truly understands the present situation and can still calculate properly, then he's simply delusional and not living in the real world.

:deal Kelly is nothing like the one who upset Jermaine Taylor. Big disappointment one after the other.

B-scene are reporting that Kessler was offered $750k guaranteed, plus a fee from Showtime and 100% of the Danish tv money. A far cry from the $3.5m that Pavlik claimed he was getting. The offer he received doesn't look so bad now.

As for the fight he pulled out of, why should he be paid huge money for fighting a scrub?

What truth? This is the truth according to Kelly Pavlik, who clearly has some twisted, warped sense of his market value! OK, 50K is peanuts for his name I agree, but it's the 1.1M that he's really pissed about. He kept on bringing up what he was worth against Lockett, Hopkins, etc. as if the value of his name is the same as it was 2-3 years ago.

He's saying he'd fight Bute in AC for 1.1M no questions asked. Bute has stated very clearly that he'd be more than willing to take a salary cut to fight there. I'm sure that would still be an option. But stepping out of a fight on such short notice shuts so many doors, and soils his name that he cherishes so much permanently.

The risk against Cunningham was minimal. A marginal southpaw with no power whatsoever, Pavlik would have walked over him. Pavlik should have taken this fight, despite the shitty payout (he doesn't care about money anyways he says) and then go on a crusade to protect his reputation.

P.S.: I listened to every second of his 30 minute interview yesterday.
