Channel 5/Boxing Update

Who's Hennessy got other than Fury?

If Fury loses and 5 have signed a big deal it's all gonna go tits up.

When it reaches a certain stage, it becomes too big for normal TV. Klitchskos and other world champs might fight at a decent time but realistically Sky should be showing all that. Normal TV should be obligated to show domestic bouts (as well as amater) as that is the grass roots of our beloved sport and its affordable.

Or switch it around and show everything on sky and the big big bouts which come around rarely on normal TV. I don't think that is practical as PPV is too common in big time boxing.

C5 - Primetime gig could be awesome. Loads of top quality boxing on C5 and then when they get to the big stage they can fight on primetime. If they don't sell then back they go to C5 until they are big time again.

 

Mick might not have the stable but he can easily win purse bids for fights.

Matchroom, before the recent signings, put on many shows headlined by other promoters' fighters cos they won the purse bids.

 

In a ideal world more boxing on tv is great but I just cant see Sky letting any of there promotors on a rival station's. I think Sky will do a exculsive deal with there major promotors for there stable. Now for Channel 5 if they could get Hennessey to work with the other promotors that dont have any tv deals then maybe between them they could build up there fighters and have a stable that could sort out a couple of fights a year.

As for channel 5 I wouldnt mind if they streamed the fights online around the world. Fury would appeal to a lot of Irish fight fans having boxed over here and his Irish roots. Most of Ireland wouldnt have seen this fight if they were from the South of Ireland so there is a market for his fights to shown in Ireland as well.

 

It's sad - you don't not show a football team on tv because you don't like the manager but that seems to be what happened to Froch, Barker and Murray with Mick. I suppose that's the crazy politics of boxing. It's a Shame they left him it would be great to see them headlining free to air shows. I wonder if any of them have any regrets?

 

I think initially Channel 5 would only be interested in showing Fury fights anyway so it wouldnt matter that Mick doesn't have many. If you were a tv company you surely wouldnt be throwing dates out like they used to.

He's got Ashley Theopane so potential Gavin fight over next 12 months as well.

Would be 5 fights in 10 months. Couldnt complain with that.

 

potentially the c5 primetime gig could be idea for boxing but the greatest danger could be c5 being too naive in the sport and buying a donkey for the derby.

 

What happens if/when Fury loses to Rogan or Price?

 

Big opportunity for Channel 5 here. Sky Sports mistreat boxing fans by putting stuff like Haye-Harrison and Groves-DeGale on PPV whilst not giving us fights like Froch-Abraham and Williams-Martinez. ITV and BBC aren't interested in boxing.

If Channel 5/Primetime only put the BIG fights on PPV and cover all the major domestic fights then boxing could be massive for them. Let's not forget that Eubank and Benn got over 15 million viewers.

Showing Chagaev vs. Povetkin and Helenius vs. Lyakovich would be disastrous for boxing.

Unlikely.

Al Bernstein said just before the Fury/Chisora fight that the occasion marked the return of boxing to terrestrial tv.
To me that hinted that the Fury/Chisora fight was the start of a string of fights that Ch5 would be showing and perhaps Bernstein will play a regular commentator role.....let's face there are no household named boxing UK commentators left with the passing of Reg Gutteridge and Harry Carpenter.

CH5 probably had cursory talks with both the Hennessy and Mr.W

So it's likely that CH5 will only focus on Hennessy fighters with Fury being the main attraction.

I very much doubt CH5 would show fights that don't feature UK fighters (and Hennessy fighters at that)
that few outside of boxing have ever heard of.
