There's definitely a fall out on the way, probably in June when Sky say they won't fund these ridiculous deals for the 2008 Olympians any longer.

Hopefully these are the last of them that are on ridiculous money for 6x3's on the undercard of some ''megashow''.

To be honest it'll be the best thing that's happened in a while to Allegedly, allowing him to concentrate on the rest of his stable rather than just exclusively on paying bills.

if they generate the viewers, sell more tickets, and get the press interest they deserve the bigger contracts.

They don't really though, do they? (Generate that many extra viewers, on PPV most of the time)

It's pretty daft being on what many fighters are for a world title fight when you're doing 6x3's.... especially when the same deals prevent your promoter from keeping you anywhere near as active as you should be.

All it does is create a dislikable arrogance about them, constantly talking about money (DeGale and Gavin guilty here) and makes people want them to get chinned.

It would benefit them if they were on five grand a fight like everybody else. They'd have the hunger, the drive, and generally the desire to reach the top.

It mirrors the situation of English footballers, they can earn a decent crust sitting in the reserves at Man Utd/City or Chelsea. Why bother dragging yourself out of bed to graft when it's all there?

Plus, amateur boxing and professional boxing have less in common than the two codes of rugby. Other than hitting the other guy and trying to stop him hitting you, there's very few similarities.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just looking at it from a different angle.

I don't think there contracts work like that at first but....James DeGales first fight did higher viewers than Ricky Burns world title fight, more people were in the arena and it gained more press interest. this is actual facts. within 2 years of turning pro he fights in front of 18,000 headlining a PPV show. Khan & Harrison were doing big box office and big viewers for 6 rounders.

Its not like this is something that happened out of nowhere with DeGale and Gavin being the only amateurs to get big deals. Do well in the ams and you get a better pro deal, get the the olympics and get an even better one, win a gold medal and your a millionaire. every single boxer going for the 2012 games knows this, every single fighter in the aba's knows it.

Also I don't think any of the olympians have taken anything away other fighters. its only degale thats been shown live every time he fights, the rest have only been live for decent fights.

i agree amateur and professional are different, the majority of amateurs at the top level are going to turn pro at some point and its very rare you get a fighter at the top level that didn't have some kind of success as an amateur. Haye, Khan, Froch all fought at the highest level, Cleverly and Burns could have done more had they stayed amateur for longer.

whatever your opinion of James DeGale, fair play to him. He obviously worked hard to win a gold medal and quite rightly he has been rewarded for it.

    All fair points.

I just don't think it's in the best interests of anyone (including they themselves) that they're a millionnaire before actually having a professional fight.

I recall Hatton saying that he was on £3k a fight back in 1997 which he considered very good money, and Calzaghe despite winning three ABA's in a row couldn't pay the mortgage in his first few years as a pro.

I mean, I'm not sure what the property market is like down that way but even these days in Leeds you can buy somewhere decent on your own earning £30k a year.

That said, I'm pretty sure it wasn't money that ruined Harrison. If he'd been on five grand a fight he'd never have made it past domestic level, just didn't have the bottle to go with his natural ability.

Mate.....a 1 bedroom flat in a **** area in London costs you £250,000. 4x your salary with a 20% deposit you wan't 50k and to be on 60k a year. Its brutal. Why I am trying to move to the states.

I agree with you but at the end of the day its prizefighting. Ricky Burns can win a world title defend it 4x, move up to lightweight and win a title defending it 4x before a big fight in the states and not make as much as money as DeGale did in his first 2 years as a pro.

As fans its not great but the boxers deserve every penny they make. everyone one of them would be in DeGales position if they could.

DeGale and Gavin deserved it as they were special cases with what they achieved. In hindsight, Sky should have told Fwank Billy Joe shouldnt be part of the deal.
No name recognition (unless you count being called 'The Other one') really so having him bang out a bum on ppv does nothing for shows.

Depends really. I like Eddie but need a lot of things to fall in their favour in next 12 months.
Barker has 5% chance imo of beating Martinez then what? Macklin fight wont be there.
Froch has 25% chance imo of beating Ward, then couple more big fights but wont be massive name.
Brook gets schooled by Khan in March/April 2012 then what?
Who else they got to step up? Rees? The non-fighting Irishman?

With amateurs will come down to money. Billy Joe idolised Calzaghe but didnt stop him going with Fwank.

    £250k :yikes

Some of the pads in Leeds city centre aren't much cheaper, but if you move three miles out of town a three bed semi in a nice area is yours, and you'll have plenty of change.

Then again, the salaries are higher down there.... well, not for construction professionals they aren't because the market is flooded.

I don't disagree about them deserving every penny, they're getting hit in the head for a living afterall.

Obviously supply and demand dictates things, but something's slightly out of kilter when a 2 fight novice gets more than a European champion on the same bill.

Still, there's **** all I can do about it

I'm not sure they're any more special than anybody else, they're essentially crossing into a different sport.

Amateur stardom hasn't always translated into success as a pro, even less so now with the widening gaps between the two disciplines.

They are more special. If Ricky Burns is a world champion but cannot get 3,000 in an arena in Glasgow and doesn't get 100,000 viewers on tv why should he get paid more then DeGale.

Fwank is not stupid. he will pay what they generate.

Sidehat is so right. Hearns strategy seems to be all or nothing. He put McCloskey in another fight he could have lost.

Fwank gets guys title fights they will win, usually at home. They win that belt and defend agaisnt mediocre oppo for 3years plus until he steps them up. Look at Mitchell, Cleverly and Burns. ****** will talk about big fights, talk about Rios and Hopkins in America but those fights will never ever happen.

Matchroom and Hearn are just going for it. Froch was already in that position but Barker and Brook, McCLoskey vs Khan, and even Frampton although its not much to do with them all in really really tough fights.

And which fight do you think the fans really want to see??? A competetive contest? or another pile of dog**** served up on a bun? Its the refusal of fighters and promoters to avoid the path of least resistance that is killing our sport.
