    Frazier:

    positives

did it vs a younger Ali, an udefeated Ali, did it to gain respect as the true champion, and it was the fight of the century

    negatives

Ali was off the lay off maybe still working the rust off a little

    incredible feat

    knocked Ali down

    Norton:

    positives

won very clearly, beat an Ali who had been active and was hungry after Frazier, beat an Ali who was well past the lay off and was at his best since the lay off

    negatives

    didnt do it first

    incredible feat broke Alis jaw

agreed. and ali was clearly a bit sloppy and out of shape in that first fight. shouldn't really matter, that was his choice but to a degree it affects the win. i personally thought ali clearly took the second fight (close but clear) leading me to think, despite the stylistic challenges he presents, norton always is a step below a motivated ali.

frazier took a young, fitter, closer to prime ali in a war in which both men put EVERYTHING on the line.

vs Norton Ali came in with a broken hand , was older and somewhat more worn. So Frazier.

Norton.Beat him more convincingly and did it against a fighter that was probably on the best run of his entire life.Never beaten decisively over the course of the three fights, either.

Hmm, a clear win against a man in his prime vs. a dubious one against a past-it version. What a conundrum.

Frazier, because there was no template for how to do it.

Anybody who came after him was at an advantage both tacticaly and psychologicaly.

itrymariti, why was Norton's win "dubious"? He won it clearly, and I don't buy that Ali had a broken hand at all.

Ali underestimated Norton somewhat, Frazier he was in better shape for and younger

For the first fight with Norton, Ali was completely disinterested. He took Norton VERY lightly. He took Frazier very seriously and was in incredible shape and fought
great. The Ali who showed up for Frazier in '71 would have beaten Norton
    without question.

    Two different types wins.

Frazier beat Ali in the trenches.

Norton neutralized Ali and out thought him.

With all due respect to Ken, his win over Ali isn't even on the same planet as Joe's.

Hell, it's closer to the same galaxy as Larry's.

    Facts

He was 29 when Frazier beat him and 31 when Norton beat him

He whipped Frazier twice and Knocked out Foreman AFTER he lost to Norton

He never dominated Norton but he KO'ed Frazier

Both are good victories, but stylistically Norton matches up better with Ali than Frazier does. He may not be a better fighter but his results against Ali are on paper better, (They weren't better to watch mind you)
