How much of this is because he sucks at defending against them, and how much is based on the fact that he's open to them being a southpaw?:think
Jim Lampley, HBO Sports: "Sure you can hit Pacquiao. The question is, how many times is he going to hit you?"
1) It's boxing, everybody gets hit. 2) It doesn't matter so much, as a 53-3-2 record (even in the modern era of inflated records) is nothing to scoff at. 3) Willingness to get hit. He doesn't mind it. Sort of like Alvarez vs. M. Hatton, everybody was screaming about Alvarez's poor defense from rounds 8ish-12 when it was 100% clear to me he was walking through/willing to get tagged by Hatton's relative soft punches in order to land his own. Not to that severity, but this is the case for Pacquiao's fighting style in almost all of his fights.
He doesnt get caught with right hands that often anymore. It gets way overstated. I cant think of any right hands that Hoya, Hatton, or Cotto landed off the top of my head. Shane landed one that I can think of. Margo might have landed a couple. Clottey landed some too, but most of them were parried or blocked. Not since the Marquez 2 fight has Pac been getting caught clean with right hands with any kind of consistency.
To be fair, most of those weren't right-hand dominant fighters, but it's how the straight right is set up (with in-range lateral movement and backstepping to match Pac's foot movement) that matters more, not so much the punch itself.
But look at the guys he's been fighting. Margarito best punches are his uppercuts and left hook Cotto is left handed Oscar left handed Hatton's be punch left hook Diaz is a southpaw Mosley didn't throw that many punches to begin with Clottey hit Manny with a good bit
Pacquiao has never been a defensive master but his left hand is usually more effective than his opponents right.
