Does the fact that michael mcdonagh has a junior box-off this weekend mean that he basically is gonna be ruled out of the senior squad for the worlds?

Probably id say, might be wrong though, it would do him no harm anyways, hes a little young and inexperienced to be competiting at the worlds.

Lads see the IOC are thinking about letting Pro Boxers fighting in the Olympics.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/14446438.stm

I think it is madness. Boxing at the Olympics is great for the am's also for fight fans it is great to see the young talented am's fighting. I think this will be a step in the wrong direction if this is brought to the Olympics. If they take this step then what will happen to the ams out there it could well mean that they may well replace the Olympic Am fights all together if they get there way. Look at the talented fighters we have in the ams you wouldnt expect those lads to be able to compete with the fully professional fighters out there. I know the Irish team is a great am team to have but if this happens what will happen to this great set up it will be gone asap. I think most of the fighters that have been in this team wouldnt want to see anything like that happen.

This is great news, maybe it can open the door to RTE again

The RTE boxing always did great numbers, it was shelved due to budget retrictions.

Sad but most likely true, but I'm really looking forward to Friday all the same.

McCloskey-Prescott: Breidis will make easy work of Paul in front of his home fans on 9/10

By Scott Gilfoid: Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 KO’s) reminds me of someone that has gambled and lost big time, but who can’t control his gambling instincts. You got to know your limitations. McCloskey just lost to WBA light welterweight

Amir Khan, and now McCloskey is trying to get a second chance at Khan by facing the guy that knocked Khan into oblivion Breidis Prescott (24-2, 19 KO’s) on September 10th at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Ireland.

It’s too bad that McCloskey’s dream of facing Khan a second time will never happen. It’s a no

situation for McCloskey. Prescott is going to come out quickly, back the weak-hitting McCloskey up with some powerful jabs and then drop the bomb on him with a big left hook that will send McCloskey down flat on his back in front of his shocked Irish crowd. McCloskey will look up and wonder where he’s at. He’s not going to be able to clear his head in time to make it back to his feet. If he does, Prescott will line him up for another left hook and take McCloskey’s head off. It’s going to be like watching a replay of Khan-Prescott. I really respect McCloskey for taking this fight, because Khan wants no part of Prescott even now after three long years of avoiding him. I still think McCloskey is stupid for taking this fight though. He’s going to lose so bad his head is going to be spinning. McCloskey is much better off going back to fighting the local fodder like the kinds of guys he build his 22-1 record.
McCloskey needs to be back fighting the likes of Barry Morrison, Colin Lynes and Nigel Wright. Those are guys that McCloskey is capable of beating, but not world class talents like Prescott. There are levels in

and McCloskey is simply not meant to be fighting a guy on the same level as Prescott. He’s going to be put in his place by Prescott on September 10th. Hopefully, this will teach McCloskey that he needs to stay at his level and be content.

The box-offs are getting weird. Barnes, O'Neill, Ward, Moylette and Nevin are all injured but are all entered too. Barnes could do with a fight, if fit but there is no-body in his weight. Conlon won the Irish fair and square, Geraghty, Phelan and Burnett could all go to the Worlds but Conlon did very well in the Euros and beat the favourit and the other lads can aim for next year. If you boxed the 52's four times you could get four different winners.
Nevin had not been beaten as a senior in Ireland ever and is a current world medalist and a possible gold winner, what if he got injured or lost a count-back?
McDonagh has beaten his two main opponents twice this year but he is edged towards the youths.
Hickey deserves a chance against Moylette IMO in all fairness and the loser of a straight box-off would get a second chance in the 2012 Nationals, like Sutcliffe.
69 is a fantastic weight but no Willie McLoughlin yet, anyone know the story there? Donnelly could surprise a few people and for JJJ it's a third chance in six months.
O'Neill is unbeaten for three years and has comprehensively beaten the no 2 Quigley in the last two nationals. He is injured to boot.
Ward is European and Irish champion, he should go, no argument. Egan then gets his chance at the 2012 Nationals. If Ward makes the Olympics, then Ken has to look up the weight. Sheehan has beaten everybody put in front of him as has McMonigle. The Cubans or Russians dont do things this way, they send their men abroad and pick the guys that deliver. Remember a fighter can become very good at taking the number of a domestic opponent or two (McDonagh anyone?) but for whatever reason not produce the same performance abroad.

No they have just qualified for the right to box at the Worlds, they have to qualify like everybody else. They get another bite next year in the American qualifier as we do in the Euro's. BTW I think we'd beat them about 7-3 or so.

Im guessing the euro qualifier is harder than the American though obviously.
