Have just heard that the 2016 olympics is most likely going to have pro boxers compete. This seems like the beginning of the end of amateur boxing to me.
I think this would bring more attention and media interest to the Olympics which has fallen off in recent years, but i dont see any any high rollers taking part such as the Klits, Floyd and Pacman ect Would it be bad to look at amature boxing much like we look at Junior Footy? Just a lead up to the big league for kids? I understand that Pro and amature boxing are almost 2 complete different sports but in all honesty I think this would give boxing the boost it's been craving for :happy
well - the two styles are very different - i guess you could compare to league and union - its the same sport but....not. i dont know i just think that there is a purity to amateur boxing. i know the last 2 or 3 olympics that hasn't been apparent but this new scoring system is fixing things up. also i think i like the idea of young fighters being able to get experience over the 3 rounds. to travel the world. fighting in tourneys where they may fight 4 or 5 times over a week or so. take out the olympics and one of the main reasons kids get into the sport may be gone. it may be a case of short term gain for a long term loss.
No top level boxers would compete for nothing $$$$ and risk losing in a 3 or 4 rd fight with the scoring criteria. It's a stupid idea and should be left to young amateur stars imo.
By 2013 Amateur boxing will be using the Pro scoring system. Headguards for elite males will also go. AIBA will also expand to include a general Pro boxing component as well as WSB and Amateur boxing. All forms of boxing under AIBA will use the Pro scoring system. Amateur boxing will remain to service the grassroots of boxing. As mentioned above the Olympics will be opened to Pro boxers aligned to AIBA. Hopefully other major tournaments that are traditionally competed by amateurs eg World Champs are kept just for the Amateurs.
np with the scoring but wtf are they doing putting in season pros against kids. This is stuuuuuuuuuuupid!
Great news. Can I ask where you heard this? A link? I'm not informed much of the AM scene but this sounds like great news.
age limit is now 40, Dale you can fight in the Olympics and still wear a headguard since you are a woman lol
****EN GREAT IDEA. ONE WORLD CHAMP IN EVERY DIVISION EVERY 4 YEARS!. AND 4 YEARS IN BETWEEN TO FIGHT ABOUT THE DECISIONS, RESULTS ETC....in the ring!! BRING IT ****EN ON!!!! :happy:happy:happy
I wonder what the alphabet soup or governing bodies will have to say about it?? in away i can see it just falling in as another ABC title out there. Unless they can lure some of the top pros and respectable champs to carry their title. Otherwise whats the point of anyone fighting for the AIBA?? most of the top guys out there now will just go where the money is.
