Tyson's first farcical comeback Post-Prison PPV fight against joke-fighter McNeeley is replaced with a Rubber Match against rival puncher Razor Ruddock. Both were clearly Past-Prime & rusty. However, this could've been hyped superbly, with rebroadcasts of great slugfests Tyson-Ruddock I & II from back in '91 shown. Mike having not fought in 4 years 2 months, whereas Razor won't have fought for 19 months, if he faced Tyson in August instead of Morrison in June. Tyson looked very sloppy & poorly balanced before quickly stopping the cannon-fodder who claimed he'd put him in a Cocoon of Horror. I realise Razor lost to Tommy by TKO6, but he gave him an even slugfest war & dropped him in the process, but sadly couldn't pull the trigger to finish things, & gassed before being stopped. Despite this, i still think this fight is more challenging for comeback Tyson than the 4 men he did briefly face prior to being dethroned in a monumental upset by Holy. Is there a need for a poll? I don't reckon anyone will vote for Ruddock, i just want to confirm this would've been a better & longer lasting fight than McNeeley, Mathis jr, Seldon & Bruno, who all failed to put up any proper resistance in '95/'96.
in 95 ruddock his past his due date........ but if i was a manager i wouldnt even attempt this fight after my fighter hadnt stepped in the ring in 4 yrs and 2 months....NO WAY
It would probably have been a better and much harder fight for Tyson than his first 4 fights back. Remember that Ruddock had Floyd Patterson as his coach, that plus 4 year layoff makes this fight interesting. Also he was a wider puncher especially in the Mcneeley fight that ever before so Ruddock would have alot of opportunities to go down the middle. I think if Ruddock didn't get caught with something big early on he could realistically beat Tyson. He'd have been a huge underdog, I would've been looking for a bookie and bet my rent money.
Can you really call it a rubber match if Tyson won the first two (where does that expression come from anyway?) But yes, Ruddock would've had a good chance of winning, though I tend to question his determination in big fights, so Tyson might've won again. It would have been a pointless, crazy route for Mike to take though.
Intresting thread Kalasinn :good I dont think anyone in the world would put Mike into a fight with razor after such a long layoff, & personally i think i'd fancy Razor in this one, lets be honest, Skillset-wise Mike was looking fairly average against Mcneeley, Mathis, Bruno & Seldon....All he had going for him was the ferocious power in his combination punching, footwork & head-movement were shadows of 5-6yrs earlier...Looking back now, when Tyson got out of prison, all us fans were all hoping he would reach the heights of his first Title reign, but in reality all he was by 95 was a media-frenzied, Cash cow with a huge Stigma......Just my 2 cents worth, sad but true :bbb
Yes, sad but true. I was nervous for Tyson against marinara sauce McNeeley. I can't imagine how I'd feel if Mike's first fight out of prison was against Ruddock :yikes
Tyson would have been crazy to fight Ruddock. Its a lose/lose situation for him. The second fight went to the scorecards, Tyson wasnt what he once was. The post prison version of Tyson would have been WORSE
Razor Ruddock in his two fights with Mike Tyson, fought like a complete ******, and neglected straight punching......"Down the Middle". He made things allot harder for himself.
