I do believe that it takes much more dedication to become the top dog in boxing than it does to be the top dog in MMA. But IMHO, if you just want to learn to defend yourself in a street fight, MMA is the way to go. It's good to be able to defend yourself in different ways than just the stand up game. My trainer, who used to box amateurs in the Ukraine, told me he got into a fight once and was taken down and he was pretty much getting his ass kicked so he learned Jiu Jitsu. But in saying that, boxing will always be the sport I enjoy watching more.

A friend of mine was a 21-0 amateuer with 19 KOs. He was in a pub macking on a girl whose boyfriend got wind of it. They fought. My friend was beating him up at first.

Then the guy took him down and squeezed his balls. My friend blacked out. He woke up with the guy mounted on him and punching him. He blacked out again.

Then he woke up because the guy was biting his face.

The next day, I signed up with Relson Gracie. I still love boxing more than MMA though.

No matter how you spin it, going to ground is giving away a dangerous positional advantage to anyone standing nearby.

Grabbing balls, piercing eye sockets, crushing throats and other assorted "life skills" have been around a million years longer than MMA.

This is ridiculous. Some assface you fight in a bar isn't going to know the in's and out's of grappling and a boxer isn't going to be a complete moron when it comes to wiggling their way out of being mounted or dropped. If anyone has actually been in a fight, they'd know this. You are far better off know the best fundamentals of boxing. Simply pivoting a charging drunk can save you from being on the floor. Feinting saves you from the obvious bolo punch that will ensue after a shoving contest. Or simply throwing a proper counter check hook on their way in will save you much trouble. Unless you punch like a *****...totally different problem :think

And that story is the exact example of what I'm talking about. I'm a ****ing boxer, but if some ******* got me on the ground in a street fight, I'll do what I have to in order to survive or get the **** out of that position.

This is typically how it should play out too. Seen it too many times, but the guy had the advantage of having that much open space.

BAR fight...much different scenario that would require a lot more boxing finesse and know-how of phonebooth fighting. (which includes how to stop a takedown.)

I know my story sounds like bull****, I wouldn't have believed it either if not for him and his friends verifying the story.

I still believe boxing is the first line of defense on the street. The jujitsu is handy in a desperate situation but I wouldn't be going for triangles and armbars, I'd just try and get back on my feet.

Co-sign. Story sounds legit as **** as I would know because I've been there. Bit a guy's hand to get it off my face. The second he let go I grabbed him by the wrist, pulled him towards me and headbutt him right in the ****in' nose. Guy grabbed his nose and it was easy pickins' from there.

Boxing is the best and most crucially vital fundamental you need in fighting PERIOD. The rest is all fancy **** to add and stuff you learn along the way.

There's so many disciplines you have to learn in MMA, i dont understand how it's easier than boxing. Organized MMA is still new, so the level might not be as high as boxing atm but that's bout it.
