Listen to the interview on January 26, 2010 on Evander Holyfield. Start at about 30 minutes in.

He stated that Roy Jones offered him 20 million and Holyfield didn't want the fight because he felt that Jones was too fast and he would not be able to track Jones down and make him look bad.

I've also heard people say that Jones wanted Tyson but Tyson's people didn't want it either.

So you have to give Jones credit for trying to make the big fights with these HWs.

    Thoughts?

Sounds reasonable ..I mean look at how bad James Toney made him look ..Styles make fights ..And sometimes two styles don't mesh ..But he at least tried and yet people say Jones avoided this guy and that ..He may have gotten starched but that didn't mean he didn't try to land those fights ..Again and as always it takes two to tango .Excellent thread ..

Doesn't make Roy Jones the Heavyweight Champ of the world. He fought John Ruiz for **** sakes instead of facing "THE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION" in Lennox Lewis

Holyfield was also shot and old by that time Roy was tryna act like he is tough, if he was so tough why didn't he try and face the early or mid 90s version of Holyfield? EXACTLY!!!

    Nice avatar.

But anyways, Jones didn't fight at HW until 2003. It would've been suicide for him to fight Lewis and get KTFO. It made sense to fight Tyson or Holyfield. And at least he tried to make those fights. Stop hating.

LL was 6'5 84 inch reach 259 weight

    RJJ 5'11 74 inch reach 199 weight

    Holyfield 6'2 78 inch reach weight 217

    Tyson 5'10 71 inch reach weight 234

Jones trying to act tough ? Really so your going to fault him for trying to fight either Holy or Tyson who of which LL both fought and last I checked when he fought Tyson he was long gone from his best yet you want to fault the smaller guy for not going after the biggest guy? Hilarious !:good

    Damn you Holyfield!!

I feel like we missed out on a couple of amazing fights with Holyfield and Tyson turning dow this fight.

Imagine if Roy Jones had staid at heavyweight and beat Holyfield and Tyson then retired..

Its a big IF, however he looked impressive against Ruiz. Whereas Holyfield struggled with him.

I think if he'd done that then retired, he'd be remembered as a top 5 of all time. maybe event top 3

If Jones had fought Holyfield and Tyson he would have beaten them and he would have had to fight Lennox.

Seeing how Tarver put Jones on his ass early with one shot. You guys think he would of beat Tyson? He would of stood better against Holyfeild instead of Tyson because of the power of Tyson. I remember after the Tarver fight, Tyson called into a radio station telling the radio show host that he would of killed Jones in the ring, based on the performance he had with Tarver. You put a prime Tyson in the ring with a prime Jones and Jones would of been murdered....lol

the holyfield fight was talked about for '97. that's when evander turned roy down. evander was coming off the tyson wins. lennox didn't want to face jones either. not saying lennox ducked him but he opted for retirement instead.

The weight was why he underperformed and became shot. If he had never moved up to heavyweight, he would have spanked Tarver. You never know what would happen in either fight. If only those fights happened.

I think Roy had a great shot vs post prison Mike and Holyfield. I think Lewis might have brutally stopped him.

I believe it. Why would Jones duck the best opposition in his prime, and then fight the best and most dangerous opponents out there when he was way past his prime after getting knocked out so many consecutive times? He was never scared. Those fights could have made record-breaking PPV numbers.

I mean the fight with Byrd he even said I think after he fought Rahman that he didnt want the Byrd fight, he didnt like the idea of that style.. holyfield is a straight shooter he isnt going to dance around it he will tell it like it is... nothing wrong with that no shame in that atleast he isnt claiming to have lost the urge or take a vacation or something.
