Norton & Frazier had personal animosity toward Quarry? Is it true?

not so sure...George avoided punchers and avoided Quarry...Shavers cornered Jerry and he came out like a lion...Jerry was a harder puncher than Lyle and faster....Based off the Lyle fight and Jerry's edge in stamina if Quarry fought the type of fight he fought against Mac Foster and Lyle I would give him an excellent chance against Foreman, of course Foreman did have a champions heart so it would be interesting.

George's chin was more solid than Earnie's though.
Jerry would make things interesting with George for a little while, but once Foreman cuts the ring off Quarry gets sucked into a brawl. The writing would be on the wall then.

Norton never mentioned a specific incident or quote from Jerry. The way Ali liked to demonize his black opponents as "uncle Toms", it wouldn't surprise me if he had started all this, but then again I've never heard any quotes. Sadly, I think sometimes any negative vibe between people of different races gets perceived as racism. Quarry and Norton were intending to pummel each other in the ring, so there'd be bound to be tension in the air, which can then easily be labeled as one thing or another.

I'm sure Norton's biography was whitewashed, however (no pun intended) to make everyone seem like a gentleman.

The reason I started this thread is because I'm wondering if there was something about Quarry that rubbed people the wrong way. Maybe he had an underlying arrogance about himself. I remember reading that in an old boxing magazine, in 1979. A guy from Boxing Illustrated tried to interview Quarry, and found him, supposedly, to be extremely arrogant and hard to get along with.

For that matter, I have heard from several people I know personally -- and who have personally met Norton -- that he (Norton) can be very cold to people. These individuals regarded Norton as being quite arrogant. Maybe these people just misperceive him, I don't know.

LOL at Sugar. I think Nat F. gave up on Quarry long before Ali vs Frazier.

I would not say he gave Frazier the fight of his life in their first bout ... Jerry met Joe toe to toe and gave him a very competitive first round ... after that he began to slow down round by round as he simply was outclassed by Joe .. by the time it was over there was little doubt that Frazier destroyed him .. the second fight was also almost all Joe and comsidered his best post Foreman fight .. like I wrote , Ali and Frazier managed to get up big time for Quarry and I'm sure the whole white hope issue was part of it , no secret about it ..

I actually feel that Ali was lucky in the first Quarry fight that Jerry got cut so bad so early as Ali was already starting to slow down and Jerry did not even get started yet however n the second fight Ali destroyed him .. it was painful to watch and one of the best performances of Ali's second career ..

Norton fought a shot Quarry, plain and simple .. a prime Quarry v.s. Ken is pickem to me as Ken was not the slow type Jerry feasted on ..

...and Patterson, Shavers, Mathis and Spencer...not to mention pushing Chuvalo and Norton to the edge.

  9. scar being racist toward black people and having a mexican trainer proves nothing. Whites today will put a mexican or asian on a pedistal and bash anything a black person does.

Racist or not, personal animosity or not, he sure got his butt kicked by Norton and Frazier - and Ali !

  11. George Foreman did not avoid Quarry. God is Bummy Davis one of the most annoying and simple minded posters here. Every single time somebody mentions Foreman has something negative to say and any time somebody mentions a white boxer he praises them like god.

Quarry was slow, he wasnt a big puncher and he has nothing to keep Foreman of him and would be crushed in of story.

Quarry was probably a racist and that was the reason Norton and alot of other black fighters didnt like him

Foreman freely admits anytime he's asked that he ducked quarry. Period. Even a modest search can several different direct quotes from foremon on this.

Quarry was not racist. Whoever keeps spreading that shot does a disservice to the man.

Anyone who says quarry was slow and couldn't punch and had nothing to bother foremen obviously never saw him fight in his prime.

Jerry hurt his back in a resturant horse playing with his brother Mike. He shouldn't have fought but didn't want to give up the oppurtunity. In his big assignments he came out a little ahead of Patterson, ko'd Shavers in 1, ko'd the undefeated ko artist Foster, decisioned the undefeated Lyle, and lost the count and bout to Chuvalo, this aside from his bouts with Ali, Frazier and Norton. A very good heavyweight, good commentator, and missed by many. While Frazier was still fighting I recall an interview in Ring magazine where he said he had no problems with Jerry.

It's all been explained tenfold after that post, not that attending a funeral near 20 years later proves anything. Interesting tho, it's great when boxers have the respect to attend others funerals. Gomez/Sanchez, Hearns/Schuler etc.
