This discussion was given in January of 2011, when talks between Marquez and Morales were underway.

    Enjoy.

Announcer Dude: We've arrived at the ring of Juan Manuel Marquez; and Juan Manuel, tomorrow in Culiacan we're going to see Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He's going to fight a North-American (US) fighter, Billy Lyell. Farther ahead, we're going to elaborate on what could happen in that fight, we'll see if we have a bit of time. But we're going to kick off with what could happen between Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik "El Terrible" Morales. I know that, well (laughs), you can't bare naked the strategy which you'll utilize, but at the same time it's public domain what Erik "El Terrible" Morales does and what he can do against you, using his reach.

JMM: That's right. What Erik Morales can do is...he's a fighter that's a little taller than me, but with long arms; so he can handle his distance, he can use his jab; he throws the 1-2 a lot, from his own distance/at range, and he throws it very well.

Announcer Dude: And so I'm going to be Erik Morales (gets into boxing stance with Marquez.)

JMM: So, he throws well. What we have to do is to box, to have our guard out in front (puts hands out in front of body and parrys Announcer Dude's straight punches); to be moving (circles), moving our waist, and to get in our own shots as he's throwing his, in order to land our own punches.

Announcer Dude: And Erik (should) step out (leans back)?

JMM: Yes, for him, step out (at distance), and for us to be careful with his own counter-punches. He throws the right hand a lot; he'll change it up into a hook (overhand right) or change it up into an uppercut. One has to be very careful, and watch out for his punches thrown at a distance.

Announcer Dude: Because this is his punch (raises right fist).

JMM: Exactly. So keep moving, bending at the waist (slips straight punches); keep moving and changing directions (shifts laterally); and, the guard always in front (puts out arms in front again). The guard always in front, so that we can make it difficult for him to apply his attempts to box.

Announcer Dude: Evidently, what does damage from Juan Manuel Marquez are his long combinations. And against a veteran (older) fighter like Erik Morales, surely they'll do more damage. But he plants himself very well in the ring, Juan. He opens his stance to withstand shots, and get in his uppercuts as well.

    JMM: That's right.

Announcer Dude: How does Marquez counter-adjust to that?

JMM: What we have to do is have our guard very well placed here (tightens up and gets close), move the waist, and after he throws his uppercuts, try to counterpunch him (throws a left over Announcer Dude's right uppercut). Counter-punch him and, as you say, throw long combinations of 3, 4, 5 punches.

Announcer Dude: Lorenzo did him a lot of damage by throwing punches to his face. Not with much form or aesthetic, but they landed Juan.

JMM: Well, I think that every fight is different. We all expect a tough fight, a difficult fight, and so the prediction remains reserved. But when two Mexicans get up in the ring, it's a guaranteed spectacle.

Announcer Dude: He's said it himself already.

    JMM: We're already ready ourselves.

    Announcer Dude: He's a warrior.

JMM: That's right, and so are we. We'll all see; a warrior, and a warrior and a half!

Announcer Dude: (laughs) In the best of circumstances, that's what we'll see.

I've seen most of these, but missed this one. With Jmm not being a total power puncher and one that likes to take his time and Eriks recent performance with Maidana maybe a fight berween these 2 might be more competitive than we thought. Thank you senor Bogo.:good

He'll never be ready for Tijuana. He likes to price himself out most of the time. Hes lucky to be getting the crumbs the GOAT is giving him.

This would mean that the actual quality of boxing athletes is on a major decline.
