Carl Froch V Steve Collins

This would be an entertaining scrap.

 

Collins, barely even a question.

 

I reckon Froch would beat Collins. Maybe by controversial split but he would just nick it due to awkward style and movement.

 

**** me Collins is way over-rated, ASTRONOMICALLY over rated.

 

Collins lost to Kalambay. Easily IMO.

Some of the things Collins did can seem a bit Abraham-like.... but like you say his defence was better and he'd punch back.

AA can't counterpunch or punch with the opponent, he's got to lead all the time.

Sounds a bit simplistic but keep a jab in his face all night and he's yours.

Collins probably had a better chin too, in fact I'm certain he did, although AA is a tough dude.

 

He worked hard throughout, but I had it 116-112 to Sumbu. This myth that Collins outworked him and was robbed...I don'tget it to be honest! :good

I had it 7-5 (didn't edit in time ;-)) so I can see 114-114.

But 'easily outworked' is what Atberry said IIRC. No chance.

 

Froch on points IMO.

 

Collins, within, was nothing like Abraham! He was one of the best lateral movers in the middleweights, just see his win against dangerous, quality Thornton to see that (where he covered every centimetre of the canvas). He was also a sneaky counter-puncher, as shown against Reggie Johnson and Pyatt. And capable of throwing sharp combinations, as shown against Watts and Kalambay.

But from the second Eubank fight onwards he sure was a reckless, flat-footed, forward-dimensional, out-and-out marauding warrior - but purposefully.

 

Collins is a far better schooled boxer than Carl. His trainers included the Petronelli's (who trained Marvin Hagler), Bernard Checa (who trained Hilario Zapata, Victor Cordoba, Herol Graham), Floyd Patterson (Cus D'Amato-schooled), Freddie King (who trained Herbie Hide, Eamonn Loughran, Pat Clinton), Freddie Roach (Eddie Futch-schooled, who trained Marlon Starling)... my God did he learn. He sparred with Hagler, Robbie Sims and Sean Mannion in Boston and fought peak McCallum just after his 25th birthday, after 16 fights.

Carl didn't serve an apprenticeship anything like that. But what Carl does have in this match is gift after gift - the long arms, the rangey jab, the right uppercut from out of range, the low pulse rate, the luxury of easy British level fights while living at home until recently, the chin, the natural power, the confidence of not realizing how limited he is technically/speed-wise, etc, as well as the ability to lure with the low-slung left and react directly from being tagged with combinations in retaliation.

Both are around 6ft but Froch is rangier and more relaxed. But Collins, is far better schooled as a boxer.

So yeah, interesting.

 

The same could be said of the likes of Eubank, the man could have had an extra few loses on his record if the judging was a bit kinder to the other fighter:good

Saying Steve would beat Froch a fair opinion.
