So did Mundine. A shot at a world title on home soil. That sort of opportunity is few and far between these days, and a long way from traveling to Germany like Geale had to.
Alvarez is a better level of opponent than Mundine has been fighting in recent years - but that's hardly saying anything! Before anyone gets too excited, consider this: It appears Trout will fight Wolak next, and Ishida, ranked higher than Alvarez after his demolition of Kirkland, is either staying up at middle, or is out in the cold. Rigoberto Alvarez isn't on Ring Magazine's rankings radar - current WBA titlist Austin Trout is Ring's #10 in this division. Alvarez, 33, is currently ranked #4 by the WBA, is coming off a loss to Trout, and has lost 3 of his last 7 fights. Yes Alvarez is a reasonable opponent. But Mundine had yet another home soil world title fight staring him in the face and chose not to take it.
Alvarez went the distance with Trout and defeated Ishida,Mandy has dodged Trout but the Alvarez fight will be just as testing, still think it probably wont happen and an Argentinian Cabby is more likely.!!!!
From what i heard, Mundine turned down a lucrative offer to fight for a world title. Mundine wanted all the stipulations his way well he can fight for his interim trinket garbage instead against a top 25 Light Middleweight which he will have a hard time beating.
This is a good fight imo. Obviously not as good as the Trout fight, but if this fight was announced 9 months ago, it would be considered a very good fight as Alvarez held the title back then. If Choc was right about the options on him fighting Trout, then this is the only way to get a fight with Trout and eliminate those stipulations. At the end of the day, this is probably the best possible realistic outcome of a fight for Choc at Junior Middleweight apart from the Trout fight. The only thing that gets me is this 'interim' nonsense when there is a super champion and champion in place. Why don't they just call it an eliminator fight?
I agree the "title" is a joke, but its not the end goal, the actual fight imo is not a bad one, and puts extra pressure on trout with a good performance. I think the bs about Mundine looking to get out of the trout fight is absolute ****, he is obviously doing everything he can to get that eventual fight! Number 1 contender, fighting alverez for interim etc
I agree ippy...in total fairness, trout shouldered most blame for having that option clause for mundine. But this is just farcical...the trout no go shouldnt lead to mundine v alvarez for some bs made up belt. Thing is, as much as we detest these sanc bodies and all the blatant corrupt practices they involve themseves in....fighters and managers still love these belts and like it or not...these bogus belts still serve a purpose - a marketing tool and it generally means a bigger purse. Doesnt mean it serves any purpose to us harder core fans ( idiots?) who know they are bogus and disregard their existence. Hanging a trinket around alvarez or mundines waist means ****...we know who the best guys in the division are and who make up the rest.
Next thing you know they will be presenting pro debut belts and you'll get one regardless of whether you win or lose
That Tarek Solak kick boxing promoter use to virtually do that on his Melbourne events and call them world titles years back on foxsports
Boxa have painted themselves into a corner with this fight. Maybe they've got a get out clause so they can still dog it. Mandy will be hard pressed to beat anyone half decent at 154. When Alvarez wins the party is all over for the " Boxa Circus " Just 24 more sleeps till 7/9/11. It'll be like Xmas in September. Can't wait.
mate at least his getting out there and doing it. Easy to sit behind that keyboard and crap on hey. He asked whats up with Trout, and who he is fighting next. He also asked about motivation in regards to money. Asked him his goals for rest of career. Fair dinkum mate, what you want him to ask? common?
oh my god that crap on badleft hook is shocking. To say those things as a report about a fighter is total rubish. As if Mundine really thinks Trout is too tough. Sure its a risk, but so long as the deal was right he was 100% in the fight. Fair dinkum some people dont know sh!t
mundine never had any intention of fightin Trout... how can you still believe that **** after his last 5 years?! ****in deluded.. he calls out champions and fights cabbies....
