And Abner Mares is a dirty **** ;-)

I had it 114-112 Mares going by the official calls by the Ref' (which is what I always do) but I think Agbeko should have won by a point or so.

    I had it:

    AGBEKO: 2; 4; 7; 8; 9; 10
    MARES: 1; 3; 5; 6; 11; 12 +2 kds

Now, a draw therefore, is fair. 114-113 Mares is kinda' fair I guess. I had little problems with the first kd, those things just happen. But the 2nd one was a travesty, and should've led to a point being taken off, leveling it again at 113-113.

Mares should've had at least one other point taken off as well. That would've made it 113-112 to Agbeko. Agbekos rough tactics were not worthy of deductions IMO.

A slow start from Agebko, though as usual he made an adjustment and took the middle rounds pretty easily with counter punching. I think it was the 5th where he landed a flush right hand counter as Mares pawed with his jab, but couldn't/didn't follow up.

Mares' only adjustment to take the last two rounds on my card consisted of him being really negative. I wasn't that impressed with him, he looks good when he's on top, but King Kong shut him down through a lot of the fight, despite being constantly twatted in the bollocks, and Mares looked pretty clueless. To be fair to Mares, I don't blame him! But it wasn't like he was sneakily getting away with it, he was blatantly hitting low and probably thought 'there seem to be no reperations so I'll carry on'.

A rematch should happen, but if Showtime wants to make Nonito-Mares than I'm happy; I'll be able to see the kid get annihilated :hey

So, whilst I do think it was a close fight and competitive, the incompetence of Referee Russell Mora (and fair play to Jim Gray for calling him on that post-fight) let the event down.

Agbeko, despite losing, came off better IMO. Mares has shown himself again to be around the top of the division, without really distinguishing himself from his peers. I hope a rematch is ordered and we see who is really the better man out of these two.

Anyone woke up and had a different outcome on their cards?

I had it 115-111 to Mares.

I gave Agbeko the round where he was KD'ed for the second time, so one point added. Then Mares should have been deducted at least one point, making it 114-112 or 114-113. But there's obviously the effect that the body shots/low blows had as well.

i had it 69-63 by end of 7th, their was nothing, IMHO, wrong with the first KD, the 2nd, well, we all saw plain and simple and Mares was very lucky to not have a point taken. i do feel for Agbeko but we shouldn't take anything away from Mares who, despite the low blows fought a great fight and is getting better with every fight. Frank Espinoza said on twitter last night Agbeko deserved a re-match and i think he'll get and Mares would win more comfortably.

I can see a one-round swing either way. But without the deduction for Agbeko (as I said before, the 1st one was fair IMO, but still debatable) and with the necessary dedutions to Mares, depending on how you scored it, it could be a completely different result.

    Let's hope so :good

I'm not disputing it was a closely-contested bout. Still, sorry to say LP but, despite being impressed by Mares again, I'm still not sold on him as a 'major' talent.

he shows glimpses of being class but seemed to fade down the stretch last night, which needs to be addressed because he could come unstuck in them rounds against the Donaires of the world. hes improving in every fight and even if it was called a draw, u can still give the young Mares credit as Agbeko is a very fighter

Of course I give him credit.

Agbeko will come out with more IMO. He looked the 'better' fighter when he was on IMO.

Mares came out all gunz blazing to make up for his previous slow starts, but definitely had to wait a while to get his second wind. But as I said in my OP, I wasn't really impressed with how he rallied in the last two rounds.

It's a matchup that heavily favours Donaire IMO, no more than 3 rounds and I wouldn't be surprised to see a very early K.O.

Just watched it this morning and I thought it was terrible. One of the most blatant robberies and biased refereeing you'll ever see. Now of course you have to give both boxers credit. Both are clearly very good boxers and both very entertaining.

You can't really criticise Mares for the low-blows because they weren't deliberate. But that said, it's the referee's job to officiate fairly and not taking a point away, and then counting Agbeko for the 2nd KD was just an awful call.

Agbeko should've definitely stepped up more when he hurt Mares in the 4th and at other times when Mares stayed static and in a way, Agbeko threw the fight away by continuing to walk into body punches (whether legal or not).

It was a good fight and all things being fair I think Agbeko deserved the win although you can't disagree with the scoring if you go by the ref's calls.

Mares is talented but he's definitely got a problem with these 'body' shots he throws and that needs to be sorted out because he can't keep getting favourable refereeing just because he's young and Mexican and right now that's exactly what it is and how he's won this tournament. I thought Darchinyan beat him and Agbeko should have too. He's a very lucky 'champion' IMO.

Plus at the end of the day, Nonito Donaire beats them both :deal
