Now you're having trouble with the facts again, just as when you thought Louis was in the 20 % tax bracket. It most certainly IS within the discretion of the government (specifically, the IRS) to set aside and/or write off tax debts. You're an American and I'm not. How come you don't know this ? In fact, it happens every day in the US. But I can see from your posts that you have bigger issues than your country's shabby treatment of one of its greats.
did enron get off lucky, did wall street get off lucky, no i woudn't call what happened to him luck, he was just a black man in white america, just that simple.
Nice try but I was born to a lower income family. My father was the first person in his family to ever attend college. I grew up in a home where my parents car had holes in floor boards where you could see througb to the road and the seat springs were covered only by old blankets. I attended college and received a liberal arts degree in anthropology so yes im well familiar with your arguments and they are hardly indefensible. This is coming from so.wine who worked with migrant workers in orchards during high school and washed dishes through college. As for being a racist I spent several years working for native american rights and count both african americans and mexicans among some of my best friends and very nearly married a girl from peurto rico so pleaseclimb off the high horse and spare us. Im as liberal as anyone but um also not blind.
Is that why your entire argument has lumped all minorities together? And as I said it's easy for you to call it "indefensible" but again try taking that debate up with a person who knows ethics - you will fail miserably as you have in this thread. And because your parents drove a crappy car? Boo hoo. You weren't raised by a single parent who didn't even graduate high school. The fact that your father was a college graduate speaks more volumes. Sorry about you having to wash dishes through college - that must have been rough. But if those are your struggles, then you have just testified truth to what I have already said in earlier posts. And having black/mexican friends and almost marrying a puerto rican does not mean you do not have a racist point of view. More flawed logic. The more you talk, the more I'd like to see you put up an "indefensible" debate with an ethics professor.
Go back and read my post. I never said louis was in a 20% bracket. I gave an example and said "you" not louis. Someone else said he was paying 90% taxes (which isn't true either, the highest income tax bracket at the time was 88%) and then said he was obligated to pay 300k on a 500k purse (which doesn't add up to 90% or even 88%) the example I set down still holds. He went broke (so what happened to the other 200k) and never paid the tax anyway (so what happened to the 300k) and yetsomehow its the governments fault that he spent money they never got... where is the logic there. Yes they came after him and yes interest accrued BUT he was aware that there was something called interest and that the longer your debts hung out there the greater they got. While we are on the subject and since you know so much of the irs. Explain to all these good people exactly how the irs goes about forgiving debt. Its not nearly as simple as this massive beaurocracy suddenly saying ' ok your free to go'. So go ahead and explain that process and then tell me that louis had no fault in the matter and the irs was this evil institution for not sending him on his way with nothing more than a lollipop.
The difference is myself and my family achieved with hard work. They could have easily come here and said they were poor disadvantaged immigrants hounded by the kkk (which they were) and never given any opportunities but they didn't.they worked hard and carved out a corner of the american pie for themselves. You can play the bleeding heart white liberal all you want carlos and bleet about ethics but at the end of the day people who hope toaccomplish something can by doing for themselves people who are merely trying toexist spend their days dreaming of someone 'giving' them a job or an opportunity. Life doesn't work like that. Have fun living in that fantasy land carlos.
Did America let him down? Yes, and they did screw him over. But Joe could've done a better job managing his finances and extravagances, like his woman problem.
Your mind is too narrow for this debate. You are like the ranting racist at a rally who can not see or refuses to see what is in front of him. You have this image of the world as a place where if you work hard you can overcome and prosper but that is simply not the case. That is what you call "fantasy land." I am a realist and I know that in the USA there are those that will be trampled on because of the color of their skin and in order to have justice and equality certain people ought to get some help. Nobody is asking for anything, they are equally qualified individuals who otherwise wouldn't get a job because they're black. You want to make up fairy tales and hear say of high school flunkies who get wonderful scholarships with income stipends because they're black and then drop out after a month - well I'm not buying that. I'm not a bleeding heart white liberal but I can recognize injustice in the economic system and the staggering statistics of blacks making up 95% of ghetto's and suffering the majority of poverty across the entire nation is a testament to what I've said. Unless, like I said before, you believe that there is something in their DNA that makes them less capable human beings, which is as you would say "hogwash." It is that way because of an INJUSTICE and INEQUALITY in our economic system and no other biological reason. So please step down from your 100ft high horse and stop trying to play up the fact that your college graduate parents had holes in the floor boards and you had to wash dishes. It is so frivolous when compared to the struggles that helpless people face everyday.
Like I said. I have fun in fantasy land carlos. Tell you what: get back to me when the playing field gets tilted in favor of minorities or african americans, or whatever group it is you are arguing for, and they, as a group actually take advantage and achieve. Oh wait that's happening every day and they aren't (as a whole according to you)... Yet im racist because I see it happen and don't pretend it doesn't. I guess im a reverse racist for hating all the deadbeat lazy ass white trash that go on unemployment and suddenly find a job the instant their benefit is about to expire. I guess that doesn't happen either. Or is it just a white thang carlos... Yet here you are playing the race card and pontificating about a wealthy black man who dodged paying his taxes. I fail to see the correlation. More to the point people like yourself ***** and moan about having to pay taxes and yet expect all these great social programs like wellfare unemployment etc to be funded from... where? And you are the realist? I think you need to stop worrying about your ethics professor and get out in the work force. Get your feet wet and not the space behind your ears and see how the world really opperates. In other words get a clue.
I can't agree with this either. In the case of maxim moore it was a lot more to do with maxim making moore pay through the nose for a title shot than racism. Maxim showed throughout his career his willingness to face black fighters. Champions, particularly historically have always tried to make a fortune for a tough or even hopeless defense. Harry greb basically got nothing for winning the title also. Its happened several times and usually it had more to do with the threat they posed than their skin color. The example of braddock louis is a very poor one because braddock passed over a white fighter to fight the black fighter and while louis had to pay ut wasn't because of his skin color but because it made good financial sense. Bradfock wasn't going to beat schmeling and everyone knew it. If he had fought schmeling (as he was supposed to) he would have lost and the fear was schmeling would have taken the title back to nazi germany and then who knows when louis or anyone else would have gotten a crack at the title given the climate of the day. So in a way, a twisted way, it was a kind of battle against racism and it was to louis benefit that he got the shot at braddock at all. Although it had a lot more to do with keeping the title and the money that generated in america than any crusade against nazism.
Your mindless ramble is just mindless ramble but can you please point to where I have ever been vocal about complaining about taxes? I am happy to pay taxes and if I were to become a millionaire down the road I would not be opposed to a tax increase. ****** Buffet has a good stance recently on higher taxes on people making over $1M per year and he has stated that the millionaires he knows agree with him. I tend to agree with Buffet. Once again you are putting words in my mouth just so you can rant about welfare and other government assistance programs. The fact is that most people on welfare aren't happy being on welfare. It is there and it helps them survive, but nothing else. Some people abuse it, but you're going to get that. The purpose of that system is to assist people until they can get on their feet and it's true that some people never do whether its because of a mental deficiency, poor social skills, physical limitations or whatever the case may be. My parents collected welfare and other govt. assistance programs when I was growing up and they weren't lazy deadbeats themselves. They both went on to become successful for the most part. My girlfriend's parents came from the middle east and they too collected welfare and now they prosper very well and in turn they pay a lot of taxes, as they have made millions in various businesses and real estate investments. That's how the system works and that is the foundation for it. You are talking about these people and these programs as if they're just a crutch for lazy people when that is not the case. That is a byproduct of the intent and it's safe to say that many of the people using these programs want more out of life than a bridge card for $400 worth of groceries and a $500 welfare check. Those with money pay into it to help others become successful, then when they become successful, they put back into and so on goes the cycle. People with brains know that your method of thinking could never be enforced because it would not be beneficial to society because that money that those people get is circulated back into the economy, and that is why these things are done. They're not done just because people want to be nice, they do it because 1- it is the right thing to do, and 2- it makes sense.
Bearing in mind Joe's enormous social significance, like few other Americans really, dignified arrangements could have been made as they are in many other countries. They are called Heroes Of The State and live out their days as such from a grateful population, money is not the issue, governments help others who can't help themselves and this nonesense that the IRS were magnaminous in waving part of the tax bill is just that, as Joe had no means of paying, were they going to insist on gaol? Great reward for a life of rare public service, he deserved everything and got nothing apart from the enduring love of the American people.
I've got a newsflash for you: the current economic situation in this country is the byproduct of spending more than we bring in on taxes. A significant portion of that spending are the same social programs you laud. There are only two ways to fix that: cut spending which means getting rid of or trimming a lot of those programs, or bring back the significantly higher tax brackets we saw 50+ years ago which you also seem to think unjustly ensnared. Louis. And that is precisely the problem. You want it both ways. So whose method can't be enforced? The one which clearly isn't working? Or a realistic model with far less handouts that's actually sustainable. When you actually get a job and start having to pay taxes instead of just listen to your professors ( most of which have never existed out of academia) then you'll see that the money that makes this government run and greases the wheels of those social programs has to come from somewhere. Start paying into the system with money you actually earn instead of financial aide and then tell me how excited you are to pay your neighbors unemployment when he's healthy and strong and comes home every day with a case of beer.
