stupid to ever compare an amateur fight to a season world champion beast...tyson beats pros in world championships..savon beats amateurs in championships.. end thread
It's unfair to compare a Pro to an Amateur, 2 very different sports now with the stupid amateur scoring system. Being an Amateur champion doesn't automatically translate to professional success. Savon won't be used to fighting a 12 rounds fight he would have to KO Tyson early to win and that simply isn't happening. Even this badly faded Tyson was dangerous and would KO an exhausted Savon in the latter stages of the fight. This being the general forum I now expect some pro cuban poster like Stevenson to say Savon KO1 Tyson.
Anyone saying Savon couldn't adapt himself to a 12 round contest quite quickly is fooling themselves, Amateur fighters spar much more than just the 4 rounds they fight. You've also got to remember Savon had one of the highest KO percentages for amateur fighters out, he's the guy that knocked out David Tua, something no one else has ever done, so his style is well suited to the professional ranks. Look at the near instant success of Cuban fighters coming out of Cuba now and realise Savon is a beast and possibly the best of any Cuban fighter ever - he's got all the tools to beat him.
You think he would beat post prison Tyson? Tyson won two profesional world championships, post prison so he was still one of the best boxers in the world.
i wouldve loved to see felix savon in the pros he had the size and power to become a great pro but we will never know :hat
Anyone who sleeps on Savon here just doesn't know the reality of boxing. Savon was 6'5 with a mammoth reach (bigger than either Klitschko brother) who was a master boxer and has beaten a "Who's who" list of professional fighters, quite a few by knock out. His style was more professional than amateur, which is why you see most of his victories coming from knock out rather than points. He was extremely well conditioned and a very good practitioner of boxing. You're talking a mammoth, well conditioned, powerful boxer with an amazing pedigree, having won gold in every Olympic games he entered. Out of anyone of Cuba's amateur stars who could have crossed over and dominated, this guy was it. I believe he would have beaten Tyson post prison and potentially even Tyson prime.
Prime Tyson no. Both Stevenson and Savon had great jabs and right hands Stevenson the prototype of modern big men like Lewis and the Klitschkos, but never truly fought fighters on his level because he never left the ams. Leave a prime Tyson or Holyfield in the ams for 10+ years theyd be untouchable in the ams. Basically they were fighting kids.
Anyone who tries to equate amateur success to professional success doesn't know the reality of boxing. Mercer had Savon hurt and stumbling and was robbed of a victory by a Cuban referee. Post prison Tyson would eat Savon alive, along with any other pro heavyweight in the top ranks. You're an idiot or a fanboy if you think otherwise. Just take a look at all cuban heavyweight gold medalists who defected and see what happened to them. Savon is also a homosexual, for all we know there might be some mental issues/doubt or other intangibles and weaknesses that would be exemplified in the full professional ranks.
Mercer was a highly competitive amateur boxer, when you fight the hundreds of times that Savon did you will always have instances where you have been caught by a punch, that's the reality of boxing. Ultimately, you're probably speaking from the perspective of never being in the ring for either an amateur or professional contest - I've done and had success with both, so instead you should try arguing the point and not the person. When you argue the person, you come across like an incompetent ****wit. Savon had all the tools to beat Tyson. Height, reach, power, conditioning, boxing ability. He would have been a much bigger threat to Tyson than many of the guys he was facing during his era of dominance, that is for sure.
