Matthew Hatton vs. Andrei Abramenka

This is live in just over 26 hours, and is for a vacant trinket that Magic Matt actually won nearly five years ago but long since vacated himself.

According to the Guardian's TV Guide (which is the only place for a yank to find Eurosport listings online, oddly enough - the Eurosport website itself doesn't allow IPs outside their coverage area to access any of its schedule features) it is only blocked out for a 2-hour slot on Eurosport 2 - from 8pm to 10pm GMT, preceded by a replay of Kessler vs. Bouadla and followed by Cricket. That means time for the main event and possibly a six or eight round support bout, to allow time for studio chatter. Very little (if any) undercard to air, in any event. Presumably Matty Askin vs. Juan Manuel Garay will get priority.

Abramenka is cloaked in mystery. He drew with Swiss cheesehead Roberto Belge, who is infamous for having been humiliatingly outclassed against Matthew and has since been blitzed in a round by a losing-record journeyman. Other than that, his 15-0-2 mark tells us nothing except that this is a hurtling-through-the-ether rocket in competition for him.

Hatton is of course coming directly off his brave but fruitless showing in a world title try against Canelo Alvarez. As he looks to reestablish himself domestically, we can gather that Abramenka is safer an opponent and his record even more padded than it would seem at first glance. The goal here may even be to duplicate the very flattering performance against Belge, with a canned hunt of someone of about equal ability. Look for early aggression and a steady body attack from Matt.

Abramenka came in 10 stone 6.75, or 146.75 - just a few ounces below the welterweight limit.

Hatton came in 66.5 kg, or 146.3.

Both look in reasonable nick.

Hatton stoppage. A+B=C doesn't always work with boxing but the Belge formline looks very ominous for Abramenka.

Didn't Abramenka knock Belge down 5 times on the way to that draw though? If so, it points to either a robbery by the judges or Abramenka being a decent puncher but below average skill wise

Yeah he says he had him down 5 times and claims the judges are unfair which i wouldn't blame him for thinking.

I remember as a kid i had a kickboxing bout in Southampton and fought this lad other 3 rounds. It was a carded bout and it was on the floor with a mat. The main ring had adults fighting for titles etc. Also a girls bout where one girl who must of been 10 had her nose smashed with a knee.

I had this kid down 6 times in 3 rounds i just used boxing and it worked really well thought it was a given. Felt well chuffed.

Goes to points and i lose because ''I didn't throw enough kicks''.

 

Imagine that in boxing terms. "Yes you did land a lot more punches but as you neglected you're jab I'm giving it to the other guy".

yeah it's madness!. My dad went to one of the judges and funnily enough later in day it was revealed he was from same club as lad i fought.

I think it really hurt them that i used pure boxing to batter all that kicking. My dad only put me in kickboxing cos clubs wouldn't take me at 9 years of age. Rarely through kicks tbh never liked the feeling of giving opponent a chance of a lucky kick or knocking me down due to balance.

I know we moan about ABAE at times but if you saw this show it was awful. The lil girl got her nose smashed by a knee i couldn't believe my eyes. The ring i thought it in was like a bear pit.

Boxing is thankfully properly governed. Dunno if kickboxing has changed since then hope it has for it's own sake.

This Juan Manuel Garay has fought against Martin Kempf. Must have fallen on hard times after Spandau Ballet and Eastenders.

 

Matthew Hatton is my least favourite boxer. Lower than Degale.

And if he doesn't like it then he can sue me.
