From ESPN ( Shaefer must be in on it too!)

Robert Guerrero suffered a left shoulder injury in sparring, forcing him to withdraw from a much-anticipated HBO main event against junior welterweight slugger Marcos Maidana on Aug. 27, Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer announced Thursday.

Schaefer said the entire "Boxing After Dark" card at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., near Guerrero's hometown of Gilroy, Calif., has been called off.

Get the latest scoop and analysis on the world of boxing from ESPN.com's Dan Rafael in his blog.

Schaefer said he got a call Thursday morning from Bob Santos, Guerrero's manager, telling him about the injury, which happened during a sparring session on Wednesday at their Big Bear, Calif., training camp.

"Robert Guerrero injured his shoulder [Wednesday] in sparring to the point where it was numb," Schaefer said on a teleconference with boxing reporters that was supposed to feature Guerrero and Maidana talking about their fight. "He couldn't move it at all. It was numb. They were hoping it would get better overnight. It did not. He can't move the arm at all, can't put on a jacket."

Schaefer said Guerrero was going to San Jose to see a specialist and would have an MRI on Thursday afternoon.

"We're afraid it is a torn rotator cuff," Schaefer said. "We don't know. As a result, the fight card, which we were all very much looking forward to, has unfortunately been canceled. I hope it will be rescheduled. This is a fight that was on track to selling out in San Jose. It really is very unfortunate that this exciting showdown is not happening at this point. We wish and hope that Robert will be well and that it is an injury that can be taken care of. When I talked to Bob Santos he sounded extremely, extremely, extremely concerned. This is a big setback for (Guerrero)."

Schaefer said he had notified HBO, Maidana and Golden Boy-promoted heavyweight prospect Seth Mitchell (22-0-1, 16 KOs), who was scheduled to make his HBO debut in the co-feature against Mike Mollo (20-3-1, 12 KOs), that the card was off.

"HBO (was) saddened by the news as well," he said. "We will have to wait to see what the doctors will say about his status. Hopefully, it can be rescheduled for a later date. Marcos Maidana obviously wants to fight, but on a week's notice it is impossible to find a suitable opponent on such short notice.

"I would be surprised if Robert isn't going to be out for quite awhile. If that's the case Marcos Maidana will be fighting against somebody else (later in the year)."

Schaefer said Golden Boy is talking about putting on a card in Las Vegas on Sept. 16 -- the night before its major Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz promotion -- and may put some of the fighters scheduled for the Aug. 27 undercard onto that proposed show.

"We'll be working to see where we can place the other fighters," he said. "We'll look to see how we can accommodate them."

Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs), a 28-year-old former two-time featherweight titleholder and junior lightweight titlist, was moving up to junior welterweight to face Argentina's Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs), also 28, for a title in his biggest fight.

Guerrero and Maidana had their last fights on the same card in April, when Maidana won a decision in a highly competitive slugfest against Mexican star Erik Morales in the main event of an HBO PPV show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In the co-feature, Guerrero powered his way to a lopsided decision against Australian action star Michael Katsidis to claim a pair of vacant interim lightweight belts before deciding to move up in weight for the chance to face Maidana.
