Real good fight, and it was talked up as a near-classic in the magazines right after it happened. There wasn't much hype for the fight going in as I can recall, but critics lauded it for the superb level of skill shown, and all the focus in the rags then was how Toney was continuing to develop and improve, essentially treating him as the winner.
He was throwing 3 to Toney's 1, maybe, but definitely not landing. Toney landed the more meaningful blows and finished stronger.
He was clearly landing more than Toney, but, as you say, Toney was landing the harder blows. That makes many of the rds hard to score. Do you go with the guy who controls the action behind the jab for the most part of the round or the one who lands a couple of knife sharp and very telling counters? I also had McCallum just edging it, but it was a fight that could have gone either way IMO. That's why a draw felt like a fair result. But I would have no complaints if Toney had edged it with a point or two either.
No worries man. I've watched ruiz-golota now, terrible robbery imo, no wonder he dropped to the tail end of the top ten. I'll be watching toney's controversial fights next. Johnson, mccallum, griffin, rahman etc. I've recently seen him against ruiz and peter 1 and 2 so I don't need to watch them again. Basically his close fights up until jirov i'll be watching next. Follow by floyd patterson's and corey spinks losses.
just watched it now toney v mccallum 1 1: 9-10 the body snatcher jabs his way to an early round. 2: 10-9 much better by toney who opens up and lands some good shots making mike miss and look clumsy. 3: 9-10 close round with the edge just going to mike who dictated large parts of the round on the outside. 4: 10-9 mike's jabbing on the outside doesn't have the same effect as james makes him miss and nails him with counter hooks. 5: 10-9 toney defending superbly this round seeming to control the pace to his liking. 6: 9-10 brilliant boxing by mike who picks and times his shots beautifully this round. 7: 10-9 great defence and reflexes by toney this round who picks off a lot of counter shots after making mike miss. 8: 9-10 hotly contested round with some great body work coming from mike, toney lands a great combo about the 2 minute mark but loses the round. 9: 9-10 brilliant round that was very even, mike's ring generalship just gives him the edge as they both landed clean effective shots. 10: 10-9 toney neutralises mike's attack this round whacking him with some hard counters throughout. 11: 10-9 another great defensive display by toney who is doing a great "hit and don't be hit" display. 12: 10-9 huge finish by toney who really hurts mike with some massive counters but mike's chin holds up to the punishment. 115-113 very very good fight, as was toney's against reggie johnson. both boxed at such a high level, I fell ultimately toney's reflexes and timing won it for him as he was able to make mike miss and land a huge bomb in return. not sure who would have took it over 15 because whilst toney was getting to mike by this point, he looked punched out after 12.
