Wrong. I have probably been following boxing since you were a child, and my studies of this sport over the last 35 years have lead me to observe that punch resistance is THE most critical variable in determining success in this sport.

Unfortunately, however, many younger fans seem not to realize this. They are blinded by their hero-worship of particular boxers or by their misunderstanding of the central importance of having a solid chin in this sport.

Therefore, it is my mission, along with my fellow Chincheckers, to point out the importance of good punch resistance, and identify those boxers with fragile glass mandibles!

Zakman - explain to me your rationale for not having Kirkland #1 after he was knocked down by the first punch thrown against a feather-fisted bum who barely grazed him with a range finding jab?

I can't argue much with that really, because Kirkland DOES have a strong argument to be in the #1 slot. I just couldn't bear to displace Fraudley, I guess - his legendary trips to the canvas just can't be ignored!!!!!

Alex Ariza, thinks the chin thing is a myth and it's all in the legs. And the way Khan and Pac's chins have held up since he worked with them, he may be right.

I found myself having the same trouble when making my list and I guess it comes down to whether you find Fraudley's multiple trips to dreamland to be more pitiful than getting flattened by a jab from a feather fisted Asian guy with all of 7 KOs to his name. I chose the latter because that was one of the most abysmal displays of punch resistance I've seen in all my years of watching boxing.

The determination of a knockdown is not necessarily due the strength of the jaw but rather the strength of the fighters legs. The first thing you notice when a fighter gets hit with a powerful shot is that their legs wobble. This makes sense in case of amir khan who had chicken legs before working with ariza and was getting floored by feather fisted punchers like willie limmond. But after working on his leg strength with ariza he is able to take vicious shots from maidana. Scientifcally you can't put muscles on your chin so if amir khan had a glass jaw then he would have been dropped many times by maidana regardless of leg strength, so ultimately the argument of a glass jaw existing is flawed.
