Benn was widely considered the 'greatest British fighter ever' after the McClellan fight

    Certainly greater than Calzaghe.

For me personally it's Ted Kid Lewis by far. But in the modern era, you can't beat a bit of Benn.

He didnt fight any real top SMWs. Toney was a top SMW on paper but lets look at Toneys time as SMW champ

look at the level Toney was fighting at, when SMW champ

1993 he wins the title from iran barkley a fighter who years earlier was blown away by nigel benn in 1 round and pummelled to a loss by a shot roberto duran barkley went onto lose 11 out of 25 fights following this fight and never beat anyone who was remotely good in doing so,the guy was so desperate he was even plying his trade as a HW in the late 90's against the likes of berbick and they say this era is a joke

govonor chambers a guy with a career record of 9 wins 7 losses, all 3 fights prior to toney were ko losses!

ricky thomas: won 11 lost 14,the 4 fights he had prior to toney all losses!

glenn thomas:won 29 lost 8, lost to roy jones prior to toney and finished his career with a first round ko loss to jeff lacy.

danny garcia: won 30 lost 22, was coming off losses to chris pyatt (a steve collins victim) lamar parks etc

larry prather: won 19 lost 24,lost his last 5 fights prior to the toney fight even losing to nicky piper

tony thornton: won 37 lost 7,lost to chris eubank a year earlier.

anthony hembrick: won 31 lost 8,lost to maske prior to toney and orlin norris a year earlier.

tim littles: won 27 lost 3,maybe one of his better wins, had fought mainly bums with the exception of a close UD over frankie liles, went onto lose to frankie liles in a 2nd contest following the toney fight.

vinsom durham: won 21 lost 37 enough said.

charles williams: won 37 lost 7 drew 3,lost to maske prior to toney.

and finally the Jones fight and, That was Jones big SMW victory where Toney was alledgedly weight weakend, other than that Jones didnt do much at SMW.

Eubank and Benn though had some good genuine SMW victories

Benn beat Wharton, McClellan, Nardiello, Galvano and drew with Eubank

Eubank beat Watson, Rocchigiani, Wharton, Holmes and drew with Benn.

Eubank had more top names on his SMW resume in fact Eubank had around 10 top 10 SMW fighters on his resume

In all fairness though, jones was an incredible fighter at 160 and 168, Benn would have the toughest fight in his career on his hands and I dont think he would beat Jones. He would have to walk through a buzzsaw to get to Jones, and Nigel wasnt exactly unhitable or unhurtable. Im not saying he wouldnt have a chance but I dont see him winning.

I still don't think Jones' resume is considerably worse than Benn's.

But I'm not a UKer so I'm sure you know more about him. The only wins that were significant to me are Sherry, Malinga, Galvano, Perez, and Nardiello.

And I gave him the benefit of the doubt with a couple of those.

I actually think if Benn backed off, bobbed and weaved on the ropes and looked to counter off the ropes, he'd be a very difficult and very dangerous proposition for Roy! It's interesting.

Im not from the UK either, but Jones has no very significant wins on his resume at 168 besides from the Toney fight and thats a fact, one great win doesnt make a resume.

So you dont consider beating Mcclellan a good win?

How was Sherry or Perez significant in any way? Or Malinga at the time? Or Nardiello?

    Very strange.

His significant wins were Wharton and McClellan, when he was predicted to lose both those fights but fought sensationally to win, and the 'draw' with Eubank (that was really a win).

Morgan, Piper and Gent were light-heavies/cruisers coming down and Benn was a middle coming up - he did incredibly well.

Morgan was quite a significant win because he'd just been robbed blind against Tiozzo and had the longest left jab in the division (and Benn out-jabbed him!).

James Toney was P4P #1 when Roy outclassed him. That win is getting understated in this thread.

I think a lot of people are judging this match up on 1. Roy's talent 2. Great Roy performances against world class opposition

Wharton was #1 contender. I don't think Giminez was top-10 but he did KD Duran in the first round, gave Roldan a great fight (in front of 60,000) and took Eubank's hardest shots!

We are talking about 168 though so you can exclude the Dewitt and Barkley wins:good

That being said, benn is a Hof'er overall, based on his career at both 160 and 168 and anyone who says any different obviously doesnt know enough about him.
