    Used to teach largely foreign students at UCLA. More than once, at the beginning of the semester, reading the roll, knew I was in trouble. Names I could neither read nor pronounce. Some required the click language

    Had to make a deal with those students, who were good-natured about it, to give 'em diminutives.
