I think the current top 10 is one of the strongest top tens there has ever been.

I know this will make people think i'm an idiot, but if you actually look at it in some detail you will realise how weak the overall quality of any top ten in history actually is. People think of the 70s and think of Ali, Frazier, and Foreman, they forget that Duane Bobick had a period of about three years of being a top 5 heavyweight, and that the division was filled with boxers weighing under 200lbs who wouldnt be in the current cruiserweight top 10.

 

All-time? Wlad is probably in the 10-14 range, around the vicinity of Liston, Vitali probably closer to 17 - 20 (though higher than that if you base more on head to head ability rather than actual record), around the vicinity of Norton.

 

Klitschko is good, damn good. I'll admit that. You'd have to be to defeat somone like David Haye.

One of the delusions is that Rocky Marciano has anything to do with heavyweight as we know it today. Another one is "Ali would beat any modern heavyweight".

From time to time fans who suffer from "Nostalgia Delusion" or "Good-old-times syndrome" gather together in a thread like this and pat each other on the back while repeating the mantra "Current heavies suck, Ali would go through them".

These fans are so pat-happy that they will never do 1 thing: Check the actual performance and the actual opponents of Ali.

Whenever I come to thread like this one here, someone HAD TO WRITE nonsense like "Ali would KO Vitali in 3 rounds". DID YOU ACTUALLY CHECK WHOM ALI KOed within 3 rounds?

2 of them 6'0''
1 of them Cleveland Williams (who lost more than 10 feet of intestines due to a gun shot prior to the bout and couldn't train the whole year)

Tell me 1 win of Ali (that impressed you the most) that points to a KOwin against Klitschko. Come on, make us laugh.

Is it against 6'0'' Liston or against 6'0'' Chuvalo?
Or is it against drugged Foreman?
Oh, wait, it must be the fight against Frazier (205+ lbs, 5'11'', 73'' reach), when Frazier was blind on one eye and had a swelling on the other.
Or was it the gift decision against the featherfisty bum Jimmy Young (34-19)?
In Ali's ENTIRE CAREER he KOed only 6 better natural heavies within 12 rounds (that's already including the aforementioned Cleveland Williams and the drugged Foreman). That's a freaking 30% KOratio.

Ali's heaviest opponent he ever KOed within 12 was featherfisty Alvin Lewis: 223lbs (Ali needed 11! rounds).

How in the world could someone like Ali (with one the lowest KOratios in the history of heavyweight titlists) KO someone with one of the hardest chins and one of the highest KOratios ever recorded?

That Ali has such a low KOratio is based on him being basically a (sub-)cruiser: Remember the Olympics 1960 (when Ali won the gold medal)? He was competing in the sub-cruiser division (division < 178 pounds)!


Ali's average fighting weight was 217lbs. Vitali Klitschko's is 240.
Ali would be one of Klitschko's bottom 4 LIGHTEST opponents (Klitschko's average opponent weight is 244lbs!).
On the other hand Ali in his entire career has not seen anyone as tall as Vitali Klitschko.
I recently checked several tenthousand fights: Just the bigger weight and height gives Klitschko already a 3:1 advantage
Big George Foreman was 6'3.5'' and 218 (on the average). Foreman's KO-victims were 205lbs (on the average). A heavyweight division like that (which was basically a cruiser division) doesn't exist anymore. Noone is interested in cruisers anymore.

First 3 rounds: Ali tries to run away ("floating") and the audience starts to boo. In round 6 the referee disqualifies Ali for excessive clinching and abusive language in the ring.

I already know all of your responses: "Worst post I read in this forum", "Ban him already", "You obviously never watched boxing", "Ridiculous nuthugger", "Stats don't tell the whole story", "Chris Byrd anybody?" etc etc... I heard it all before. Ali fans are sooo predictable.
Don't bore anyone with your favorite smilies or your favorite justifications why "Ali is the greatest despite all counter-evidence". Instead you should concentrate on arguments BASED ON PERFORMANCE OR RECORD.
