Honestly probably people drinking the Ali kool aid would only be the ones to say that. With Joe's brawling style he had to have a good chin. Most of Joe's opponents were taller than him and he had to get inside and break his opponents down. Later in the fight he would take them out. In many fights Joe had he lost the first couple of rounds or so, but when he started smoking he ran through his opponents.

i thought really frazier's chin was top notch..the only fight of his i saw of him that i was like he can't continue was the first fight with foreman..after that 6th kd frazier literally was out on his feet..eyes were glassy as anything and wobbling..he wasn't like that when he was stopped by foreman in the second fight or thrilla in manila

and whoever mentioned the cummings fight..ive seen that fight and joe was nearly ko'ed like 3 times by jumbo..cummings did hurt him in there

Great post. I haven't seen any Mathis/Wepner film that I can recall, thought the first time he was off his feet was against Liston since watching that one not long ago. Yet, Wepner up to at least very recently insists that the Ali fight was the first time he was ever knocked down. :-( Balboa wouldn't B.S. you like that.

Incidentally, I think I figured out where Goyourownway has become confused:

The spelling is different. This guy can't take a punch for ****. ...Bugner actually stopped Frasier. On a jab. (Apologies if someone else had figured it out and commented already)

Not sure if getting Ko`d by Big George qualifies someone as having a `bad` chin. Smokin Joe,could be a bit shake early on, but... Once he got warmed up, he shook the shoots off pretty good. Foreman kept dropping Frazier but couldn`t keep him on the deck, he kept getting up. He was no Ali with his whiskers but ceratinly no Patterson either...I`d say about a B rated chin...

Cummings was not close to knocking out Frazier.

Correct, and that was a very old and tired version of Frazier...

If Frazier had a glass jaw, then Ali was the puniest heavyweight puncher ever.

Not classic glass , but true , Ali was indeed a puny heavyweight puncher , especially when one considers his size and the size of his opponents.

i've considered this in detail and watched a lot of joe's fights.

at first I assumed his chin was garbage which dramatically lowered my rating of him since I envisioned him losing to almost everyone out there.

but then I sat back and fought, aside from big george, who's knocked him out? the answer, ofcourse, is nobody. I think the fact george knocked him down so many times is much more of a testament to foreman's power than it was to frazier's chin.

the truth is, although he didn't fight lyle nor shavers, when he was at the top, those guys were nowhere. From 67-73 joe fought everyone out there and only big george could dent him.

it's fair to say his chin is solid and durable.

Actually, up until recently his chin was viewed as top notch despite the brutal loss to Foreman. Revision is a strange thing.

True, but Norton did fight big punchers like Shavers and Cooney and was stopped in 1 round by both while well past his prime. Compared to Frazier... Norton had similar results vs. Ali x3, Foreman, and Quarry. Norton's chin is considered **** and Frazier's is usually considered good. Just something to think about.

Norton's chin isn't ****. in his prime he only got stopped by foreman and shaver, two of the hardest hitters in history.

Amir Khan's chin isn't **** , he was only stopped in 1 by Breidis Prescott .
David Haye's chin is ATG granite , he took both Valuev and Wladimir the distance without getting downed , was only stopped by the rugged CW champion in Carl Thompson after getting gassed.
Floyd Patterson's chin was rock solid , he was only KOd by ATG punchers in Muhammad Ali*2 , Sonny Liston*2 , Ingemar Johansson.
Earnesto Shavers' chin was diamond granite , was only KOd by super deadly punchers in Ron Stander , Ron Lyle , Jerry Quarry , Randall Cobb.

Frazier's chin is very durable. He was walking into those Foreman shots and they were relentless. Foreman was able to do more damage to Joe because of that height difference
and in Joe's style in general. But again, Joe kept getting back up.
