Not sure if this has been posted before on here.....
But anyway, this footage is very good......by far the clearest version of Ketchel I ever seen, the speed of the video is good (not great)..... Check out the clarity of the fight, good quality video....

Great stuff! Thanks. Where'd you find the footage? As you've said, it's pretty good quality...

Vic,thanks for this clearest version of that fight in Colma,June,1909.A little over 1 year later Ketchel was killed by Walter Dipley.
A few things : I have read that Ketchel fractured a hand in that fight, and I have noticed that in this fight he SELDOM used his great right hand at all.Just a few times in the body. Before he died Ketchel claimed that this was his worst major fight, and I can see why. At this time, Stanley was going downhill, on opium and booze, and he had only 3 more fights, before
his mgr. and braintrust decided he was burned out and needed a complete rest from boxing. He went to a friend of his's ranch in Conway, Missouri, where he died from a bullet wound, in 1910. Good clip Vic.:good

Kind of a crappy fight. Hugging, mauling, rabbit punches... and Papke's shorts, jesus.

papke does good work as well. a lot of people thought he won the fight.

yeah those shorts may not leave much to the imagination but they sure leave a LOT to be desired.

As Burt mentioned above, it does look like Stanley's right hand was injured as his entire offense revolved around it. However, many of these 20-25 rounders were a bit slow because the fighters were clearly pacing themselves.

I wouldn't pay to watch that, sorry. Lunging hooks, falling in and grappling, leaning and clawing, a ref who gets no respect from the fighters. The **** would put me to sleep.

Great quality film and thank you for posting ... with all due respect to Ketchel, every time I watch him I cringe .. to me he reinforces the worst stereotypes of fighters of his era ... absolutely looks like a club fighter to me at best .. no doubt he was a tough customer but I can name twenty middleweights off the top of my head that would have destroyed him.

was thinking the same thing. i have a hard time believing that he got the best of a bigger sam langford over six rounds. this footage is excellent. much more cleaned up than the version i have.

    and why's that?
Granted he looks shitty by modern standards, but the very same Stanley ketchel dropped the HW champion at the time, only to get shortly afterwards KTFO by the most telegraphed punch in the history of boxing.

When you say "with all due"... what respect are you paying to Ketch, exactly? Sounds like you don't think much of him. Monstrous power, chin and heart. He cleaned out a stacked middleweight division. And he was a good boxer. I've heard it claimed he did the Fitz shift better even than Fitz himself. I'd like to hear the 20 you can come up with off the top of your head?

He must be kidding because there's no way a guy who's that game and has that kind of pop is getting "destroyed" by 20 MWs...not the '07-'08 version at least.
