Who do you rank higher as an ATG: Azumah Nelson or Floyd Mayweather Jr?

    Some quick points:

    - There really isn't much to choose from between the sfw reigns of Nelson and Mayweather

    - Nelson's win over Fenech is better than any of Mayweather's wins, all things considered

    - Nelson's win over Gomez is arguably better than any of Mayweather's wins as well

    - Nelson was still taking on dangerous younger fighters (Ruelas, Leija) when he was 36/37 and knocking them out

    - Mayweather scaled more weight classes, but Nelson had two solid reigns in two good division, fw and sfw, which Floyd has not

This is closer than many people think. And Mayweather is no top 50 ATG IMO. No way in hell.

I was referring to the near-consensus Floyd is a top 50 ATG rather than comparing with Nelson:good

ohhhh you think I'm a floyd fan? no, god no. I'm not looking to convince anyone about anything.

I just think by default I always place him above nelson but as some posts show, it could be closer than one would assume.

    perhaps it is closer.

also, I'm not convinced Floyd belongs outside a top 50 list. If I had to sit through every name maybe I could find 50, who knows? but my default opinion is he belongs in that region and I guess I don't know enough about, atleast, 50 other fighters!

No, not at all mate :good You're very rational, just that I can't even be convinced with many of the Plus points peeps bring up when they disagree with my rating of him :good

Above Nelson? Possibly. But not a top 50 ATG IMO, that was more my point.

Come on Man! Floyd may not have fought everyone he could of. But Corrales was a beast so was Castillo. Hatton and the bigger Dela Hoya. He fought of of Hall of Fame type guys and shut them down. He won the WBC belt in 5 weights. His resume is very good maybe not as good as if could of been but still come on! You cant call him a ***** and cherrypicker when he has moved through the weights and beat these bigger guys who were on the P4P List and stuff.

Interesting points being made here...I was always pretty comfortable having Floyd clearly above Nelson..but perhaps that needs more thought.

acid test: can you, or anyone else for that matter, name 50 fighters you are confident deserve to rank above Floyd?

I can when I'm not at work (my list is on home computer)

I would rather PM it to you than have the whole merry-go-round of people picking it to shreds, drop me a PM if you're still interested :good

Here's a few guys that are just outside my top 50 that I'd comfortably rank above him, and to Starvin' Marvin, winning the WBC belt in a hundred weights would still mean **** all to me :thumbsup

    In no order

    Mike Spinks
    B-Hop
    Dick Tiger
    Sal Sanchez

    Hope this helps :good

That happens with almost every top fighter. You don't throw a great prospective cash cow in with just anyone.

Yes. With ease. More than fifty in fact. Considerably more maybe.

Of Floyd's era the top fighters
    Roy
    Floyd
    Pac
    Hopkins

Roy was especially wary about facing big punchers even though he would have easily beat them. Any time he faced world class competition, he outclassed them,. Him not fighting them doesn't diminish his legacy as an ATG

Floyd. Didn't fight Freitas, Kosta, Cotto, or Margarito. All guys he could have beaten(Freitas would be a very tricky match up though).

Pac. Wanted no part of Joan Guzman. When he went to 135 he cherry picked paper champ David Diaz over the unified true LW champ, Nate Campbell. Bad match ups for Pac so the fights didn't happen. Hell, 5 of Pac's 8 division titles are paper belts.

Hopkins. Continually cut weight to stay at 160 instead of following guys like Toney and Jones who went up for bigger fights. Instead, he feasted on a weak middleweight era which is where the majority of his legacy comes from. He's still an ATG in my eyes, regardless.
