No problem with catchweights. It's when a World title is sanctioned in said catchweight that it annoys me. Should not be allowed. Weight classes are there for a reason, world titles are in turn placed in that weight class...if your opponent is not allowed to maximize his weight in that weight class, and fight for the world title like it is supposed to be...what's the point?
Good point. A pro fighter not making weight is about as unprofessional as it gets. Particularly when a guy turn up pounds over and plainly has made no attempt whatsoever to make weight.
Agree with this. If it's a way to get 2 good fighters in a ring with eachother with a playing field that's as level as possible it's only a good thing. But I guess the TS is talking about titlefights in catchweight, wich is ridiculous and should not be allowed in any way.
True, but what about your thoughts on just to make a fight happen that normally wouldn't. And they are sometimes used in the past to make great non title fights that might not have happened otherwise.
Not specifically, in any fight. I don't like them in title fights however titles are for nothing but making more money/promoting an event etc.. Zero credibility.
the problem is most esb fans misunderstand weight classes, let me make it clear for you. Using the welterweight class as an example because its the most popular. Just because you are fighting for the welterweight title doesn't mean that you have to fight at the welterweight LIMIT. The weight classes are there so people can fight at whatever weight they want to contract to, catchweights are there to level the playing field, both fighters agree to come into a presigned weight. Welterweight fights and title fights can be made anywhere from 141 lbs to 147. All the fights title or not do not have to be the same. Now with that being said we all know that it was the commission's intent to make money off a Pacquaio fight for a 154 lb title. If Margo could have made 147 Pac would have fought him there instead. After that fight Pac realiazed that fighting 154 lbers is too much damage even for him and vacated the title. I mean the numbers just sound good to say that he is a 8 division champ but we all know its bull****, Margo was not a champ at 154 at the time. don't hate on Pac for the fight hate on the commissions they are the real slimeballs.
People (by that I mean uneducated fans) act as if there's a problem with catchweight fights as if coming in at the maximum limit of each weight division is mandatory. What they fail to realize is that each weight division is designed so that fighters can fight within the weight boundries of any given division as they wish. And because of that, I see no problems with catchweight fights even when a title is on the line as long as both boxers fight within the same weight limit.... because guess what?? If you're fighting for a welterweight title at a catchweight of 144 lbs, your're still fighting at welterweight for a welterwight title, you idiots! If the champ wishes to agree to the terms of a catchweight then let him. It's the champ's ****ing choice.
i see the compromise benefits of making fights by way of bridging the small gap, but mainly just leads to less legitimacy even if money is made. why create new weight limits within already too many classes? just an all around mess.
Catchweight bouts with the title on the line makes it somewhat easier for someone to pick up a title in a higher weight class, and then brag that they are two/three division champions (probably against someone considered as the weakest link in terms of reigning champions). Said boxer can win that title at a catchweight, then move back down claiming the guys in the division above are too big. Said boxer wasn't willing to defend title, and the title becomes vacant. If someone isn't willing to win and defend World title at the maximum limit available...they should not be allowed to fight for said World title in the first place. It makes a complete joke out of the already tainted belts.
I'm against it, but not as much as a lot of people here. After all, weight classes are based on arbitrary numbers anyways, so there's really no reason per se to be against whatever arbitrary number the fighters agree to pre-fight. Unless the fights are for titles based on those arbitrary numbers, and both fighters agree to the catchweight, what's the problem? EDIT: Of course, we should keep in mind that titles don't mean much anymore anyways. So that makes catchweights even less problematic than they have been for the past 100 years of boxing.
So hypothetically speaking, if Floyd came in at his most comfortable weight in a fight against one of the Klit bros, who also comes in at his most comfortable weight, and beats the Klit, he shouldn't get props?
Catchweights are there for boxers to meet in the middle, have an even playing field. I'm all for that. But when you have boxers winning World titles via catchweights, do you not think that just makes it harder for bouts to happen in said weight class? You have boxers who train to come in at the maximum limit available, each and every bout (basically the lowest they can get without killing themselves). But then you get a boxer moving up, wins a World title, isn't willing to defend World title at the maximum limit available...how many potential bouts are not going to happen because of this? It makes it far too confusing and troublesome. If you are not prepared to fight at the full range in said weight class, whether you come in below the maximum limit available or not...you should not be allowed to fight for that title.
