I dont think he's a great..he's never really been one of the top dogs at any point. Having said that, the list of names above is ****ing stacked. Thats a wide array of styles of solid fighters which he's beaten

Mayhem is world-class on the ground and Shields still beat him fair and square. And Shields was clearly weight-drained against Kampmann, was his first fight back at 170 and he was visibly and badly gassed in 3 rounds in a way he never was in 5 rounds at 185. ****-weak arguments here.
I'm being a bit harsh, a couple more good wins and I will consider him great. Henderson was anywhere near his best for that fight.
I think if he can firmly establish himself as no 2 in the WW division then he will be considered great Imagine the Shields v Fitch slugfest, got war written all over it
Mayhem is not world class, he's just a good black belt. World class is Penn, Maia, Werdum, Gonzaga, Veira, Pederneiras, Garcia, Roger Gracie, Cobrinha, Estima, etc. GSP dominated him, beat him up badly, and he never had any single good moment in that fight and if Shields was "great" he would have done the same thing. He might have been drained against Kampmann but he wasn't against GSP and the same thing against Gomi applies here. Gomi fought Penn, that generation's best LW and a true great, and it wasn't close. Shields fought GSP and it wasn't even close even though GSP fought like a cowardly disgrace in that bout. Fitch has beaten most of the best contenders at 170 but I wouldn't consider him great because like Shields he fights to win on points and he's not even remotely close to being as good as the #1 as evidenced by the beating he took. I just can't call a fighter great if he fought his division's best fighter and couldn't even make a fight out of it.
Nah, Mayhem is world-class on the ground. Shields is the only man in years to take rounds off GSP on the cards, he gave Georges a better fight than Fitch did. Anyway, one fight doesn't decide if someone is great or not. GSP was the worst stylistic match-up possible for Shields, as Shields wins fights on the ground and GSP has just about the best takedown defence in history. I think Shields is very close to greatness, and wins over the likes of Ellenberger, Fitch (who he would beat) and maybe another good run at middleweight or at the title if GSP moves up would seal the deal. His resume is excellent.
I would love to see Shields vs Fitch, honestly! I know it's probably be boring, but I think it would be fascinating too, to see which grimly effective fighter could impose his game and his will on the other. I'd firmly back Shields to win.
i guess it would actually be pretty compelling from a purely technical viewpoint would also be hilarious to see the crowds reaction
Jokes aside, I always enjoy Fitch and Shields, great to see a guy get worn down by relentless grinders.
