Would Golota be mentally tougher if he had just ducked Lewis?? The late Gary Mason said that one of Lewis's biggest strengths was to get under the skin of his opponents - either with intimidation or downright annoyance. Holyfield said that the Lewis fight was the only time he fought genuinely annoyed and it threw him off his gameplan. I think Lewis's unpopularity in America was largely due to him getting under the skin of the US public as well his opponent. Now is it coincidence with odd fights like Akinwande [holding on for dear life] McCall [crying] Golota [not wanting to fight] Tyson and Rachman [both fighting at press conferences] Bowe [binning a belt] and Vitali still wanting to fight him again.... Lewis's fight started months before entering the ring and his psychological warefare is grossly under rated. Would have been fascinatiing seeing the psychological build up to a Lewis Ali fight....
I heard it was Lewis bad breath that threw his opponents off. What a dumb post, Lewis was never getting under his opponents skin, he was just not liked because he was a pompous ass..
Dempsey signed to fight Wills. It was Wills' management that failed to deliver. I don't remember some bull**** with a garbage can.
Lewis would not have been able to do to Golota what he did to him if Golota didnt go through what he did against Bowe first.
You've answered the question. Lewis would win because he, like Bowe against Golota, is mentally tougher. Skills would play a part, but I see it being a fight, and I see Lewis winning the fight by being more agressive and landing the harder cleaner punches and simply fighting a smarter fight. I'm not one of those who think Lewis can only win on the outside. He's shown over and over again that when he's truly worried about an opponent, he will go in there and try and overwhelm them. No one is saying the olympic win was a good stoppage, not by professional boxing standards anyway, but he was certainly outlanding Bowe and wasn't 'boxing him from the outside'. he did what he did against Ruddock, Golota, Grant, Briggs and others, he out fought them and used his superior power and speed to win. Most people don't remember how fast Lewis was. Go watch him fight in the first 3-4 years of his career and you'd notice that he was extremely athletic. That said I like any fighter that goes to the body..we don't see that nearly enough, and Bowe would be doing that, but I don't completely buy the argument that Lewis can't fight and beat Bowe from mid range or use his upper cut to hurt Bowe. He's quite capable of winning that way but in all likelihood I think Lewis would establish a jab and then start throwing combinations leading to an eventual victory. That assumes he unsuccessful in overwhelming Bowe, which would likely be his first option.
I previously posted picking Bowe. Unfortunately I haven't seen the Olympic bout. Ive always heard Bowe got destroyed in the Olympics though. However I don't Think Bowe was scared of Lewis in the pros. Bowe grew up in Brooklyn, became undisputed champ a legit tough guy. As great as Lewis was he got knocked out by Raman because he didn't respect his power and by McCall because mccall had his number practicing the short right hand in the gym. Point being Lewis can be gotten to. Anybody have any proof if Bowe really ducked Lewis or if it was over money and ****, probably only Bowe knows. I just think there would be moments When Lewis would not show enough respect for Bowes skill and lewis would get his timepiece cleaned.
This is how the fanboy in you gets exposed, always the same with you fanboys. You begin to post generic **** that doesn't really relate to the point you're debating. If you read my post you'd see I expect that bowe would have beaten him circa 93. I also believe vitali beats lewis in a rematch and tyson beats lewis prime for prime. Wait no, i'm a delusional cry baby fanboy right? Surely no reasonable person could conclude that a peak lewis could beat a peak bowe? I suggest that lewis's fights with bruno, golota and vitali indicate lewis could beat bowe. Ofcourse bowe has the power to knock out lewis, most greats have the power. Which fights of bowe's suggest you think he could beat a peak lewis? Cut all the fanboy nonsense out because it doesn't wash.
Lewis wins by lopsided decision for me or late stoppage, Lewis only had problems when he was over confident and thought he had nothing to fear from his opponent. He would be well aware that Bowe was a big threat so i would expect to see Lewis at his very best and that is a fighter that is different class to Bowe. Anyone as easy to hit as Bowe would be in for a very painful night against someone as powerful as Lewis so he would have done well just to hear the final bell.
I always took the garbage can incident to be a big "**** you" to the WBC, who were enemies of Rock Newman, and pawns of Don King. Rather than something that just came out of the blue because Bowe decided Lewis was too dangerous a fighter.
Lewis at his best is better than Bowe at his best. This logic points to Lewis winning. However Bowe has a more solid chin. When you have two big guys who can fight like they can. It could easly come down to who can take the most punishment. This logic points to Bowe winning.
Did it have nothing whatsoever to do with a certain fight in the olympics? Wouldn't you have thought that Bowe would have crawled over broken glass to fight Lewis if he was confident of beating him?
Any version of Lewis would score the counter right just like Golota here, except Bowe might not get up from a Lewis right and if he does, he won't get out the round [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNW5lpa_ehM[/ame] Any Lewis KO1 or KO2 over Any Bowe, BOWE KNEW IT
