WBA lightweight titleholder Brandon Rios could return to the ring on Showtime potentially against Kevin Mitchell on Dec. 10, Rios trainer, Robert Garcia, told RingTV.com.
"There's no official name," said Garcia, "but I was told that they're looking at having that guy, Kevin Mitchell."
Rios (28-0-1, 21 knockouts), THE RING's No. 1-rated lightweight, is coming off of third-round knockout of Urbano Antillon in July.
Mitchell (32-1, 24 KOs), THE RING's No. 4-rated contender, is coming off of last month's eighth-round knockout of previously unbeaten English countryman John Murray (31-1, 18 KOs), which helped Mitchell to rebound from a third-round knockout loss to Michael Katsidis in May.
"[Rios' manager] Cameron Dunkin has told me that Showtime has already agreed to Dec. 10, but no opponent. He said that he would like to do it here in Southern California, maybe in Los Angeles, or, maybe in Las Vegas," said Garcia.
"Nothing's for sure, but that's what it looks like. Cameron was going to try to talk to Top Rank today to see if it's a sure thing, but that his understanding was that it was going to be on Dec. 10."

although its interesting i think its sort of a waste of time.

Rios and team say they want Maidana, guerrero or soto all 3 much more intriguing fight.

Maybe good money in it why take risk of stageing another big Mitchell promotional fight when he could fail and let his fans down again wheres as he could go to the states and get beat and comeback to the UK and continue his career no worse of in the eyes of many of his fans or win and became a decent name in the US then stage a homecoming fight for him

Maybe Frank, Tibbs and Kev fancy Rios - see something that they think Kev can use to beat him?

It’s the completely wrong fight for Kevin right now. There’s just nothing he’s got that will trouble Rios who ran over a much, much better and more proven fighter in Acosta.

Sure Acosta had a lot of success early, but his skills, his power and his ring savvy are all far ahead of Mitchell’s. And Rios just kept at him until he was exhausted.

Can someone actually break down for me how Kevin can win? Specifics, please, not lazy “He’ll keep turning him and control him with the jab.”

Does Acosta have more power than Mitchell? I'm not so sure. He is definitely a better boxer (and he was beating rios early on), but I wouldn't back Acosta to knock Murray out. That said, Mitchell doesn't win this. Rios is too big, too strong, too good. Mitchell needs to develop. Saying that, I hope Kev knocks him spark out.

There's probably not much of a window for this fight to take place, Rios will be at 140 if not 147 before long.

Mitchell has only had one fight back after a year off, he really needs a solid eight or ten rounds against some double tough opponent, then potentially an eliminator for one of the titles.

Realistically he'd be better giving this the swerve and obviously Marquez if he comes back down to 135. Anyone else, stick him in and then see what happens.
