Ketchel vs Papke - high quality video !

P,U asked for one fight where the oldtimers didn't look so bad ? Well just look at a fight 101 YEARS ago in 1910 when Owen Moran the great Birmingham LW kod the iron man Battling Nelson. Look at the great ability and power these old rugged men displayed, and you will change your tune.Check out Owen Moran/Battling Nelson on youtube. And they could and DID this for 45 rounds when required, with no mouthpiece, skintight gloves,and 30 fights or more a year.Check it out...

 

there were exceptions of course as I and others have sighted, but the evolution to skillfull style and finese was still 20 years in the evolution coming! Plus as I've stated numerous times and as does Burt old film footage is not an accurate portrait of everyday life, sometimes the odd peice is good but that too came on leaps and bounds in the 30-40 years that followed!

 

Ketchel looks disgraceful against Papke to be honest but the Owen Moran-Battling Nelson footage was a real eye opener for me.

Moran was superb in this. His ring generalship,footwork and punching was terrific as he broke the taller and rock hard Nelson down before finally stopping him.

I posted this a while back but it really did remind me of Mosley-Margarito as the smaller boxer outclassed the taller always approaching Nelson.

Thanks Vic. The video is very good, but he boxing is not. Every time I see Ketchel I think a bit less of him. He is perhaps the most over rated old-timer on film.

M,As I posted before,Ketchel in the ONLY film of him available,sans the Jack Johnson fiasco,had a broken bone in his hand. Would THIS Ketchel ko the 12 pound heavier Phil Jack O'Brien,as Stanley did ONE month earlier ?NO ! In this clip of the last fight with Papke, Ketchel was a ONE-handed fighter,who normally depended on tremendous two-handed punching power
with great stamina and ferocity, not cutie pie boxing. At his best,he was an animal in the ring as his 49kos in his 64 fight record shows. I go by the old adage---"One swallow [bird],doesn't make a spring"... That applies also to
the Ketchel/Papke fight...Cheers...
P.S. As for your assertion that Tommy Ryan "cleans Ketchel's clock",well when Ryan was champion ,he boxed an exhibition with a young 18-19 up and comer named stanley Ketchel who got the best of the session and Ryan claimed he had his "hand's full to last the exhibition. For what it's
worth....
