Roy Jones is forced to back up to the ropes with his high guard and gets rocked

This thread subject does pop up every so often..and I'll say what I always say..that after he busts up Jone's arms..biceps and shoulders and generally mistreats him, he stops Jr. in brutal fashion by a ko in 8 or 9...maybe sooner.

A few years ago a lot of people would be saying Jones toys with marciano until he cuts him.

funny how after a few years pass it is difficult to visualise jones at his best..

My take also. Rocky could beat the **** out of Roy without landing a single scoring blow. It's not just the arms, biceps and shoulders which take a pounding, but also the back and kidneys. Throw in a few low blows for good measure, and supplement with some nasty elbows and perhaps a few head butts and shoulder blocks to the chest. RJJ doesn't have the height and reach to entirely avoid being hit, and Marciano's hand speed is dreadfully underrated. JJW was still an extremely slick and competently shrewd operator when Rock nailed him in one with a single shot.

Roy might win every minute of every round for nine, but he wasn't nearly as tough and durable as Matthews, who was handling Marciano easily until that lightning jab-double hook from nowhere laid Kid out.

Charles survived their first match by smothering away Rocky's punching room and giving ground grudgingly in mid ring. Jones would give Marciano all the punching room he wanted, and pay a deadly price sooner or later, especially over the championship distance. Marciano's 100 punch closing round in Charles I might be a 15th round HW record.

We're not discussing Ruiz here. There's no way RJJ gets through 15 rounds without getting nailed on the chops at some point. One punch HW knockout artist versus one punch knockout victim at 175? I know who my mortgage is on.

jones did take those shots from merqui sosa on the ropes very well though. james toney said merqui was the hardest puncher he faced. however rocky was much stronger. idk

I assumed that the Tarver fight would put an end to this sort of nonsense.

    No such luck!

    1)Jones loses by knockout.

2)**** me, the perspective of the classic lately is pretty anti jones. he's an amazing fighter, one of the best ever, and every fantasy thread he's in he gets trashed

I'm comfortable saying jones loses because rocky is all wrong for him. not because he's a great fighter, nor because he's a great heavyweight. jones would beat other great fighters and may even beat some great heavyweights. just not this one

If Jones can run for 12 rounds, he has a chance. Marciano likely catches him and stops him in the middle rounds, but not before Jones' hand speed frustrates the Rock for the first half rounds.

first off, there's little size difference between them. rocky was 5' 10" 185 and jones is 5' 11" and with day before weigh-ins would come in the ring 180-185 at light heavy.

rocky had all-time great heart and stamina but if you can't see that jones is the more skilled of the two, you need to follow another sport. i know this is hard for some of you to come to grips with. this doesn't mean jones wins but it's also beyond ridiculous to think jones would have no chance. this is the same marciano that fought in the worst heavyweight era besides for today. the same marciano that got a questionable decision vs 58-49-9 ted lowry, was down on the cards vs 38 yr old walcott before the ko (greatest right hand in history), and pulled out a miracle vs a past prime charles in their rematch.

cockell lasted 9 and lastarza 11 in rocky's title reign but some think when the first punch is landed on jones that he'll go away. jones was the greatest fighter of his era. i think he'd be able to hold his own and i'd pick him to win this matchup.

i don't think i've met one old white guy that has liked jones. the same was said about ali when he was in his prime as well. i've been told on more than a few occasions that jones "was too arrogant and too much of a ******" for them to like. i've almost gotten into a couple fights when this has happened. i get the same vibe from most on these boards. i've had the good fortune to speak to jones and have met and talked with many in the business who have dealt with and are close to jones. they've all said what a great guy he is and how he goes out of his way to help people in need. i know all this doesn't mean he beats rocky but most, especially the old-timers, have incredibly skewed view of jones.

if you don't think jones was a great fighter, that's your (stupid) opinion but his fighter of the decade award says differently.

Marciano would seriously hurt Jones with glancing punches..never mind the big shots he laid out his opponents with.
