    My favourite fighter is Charley Burley. His finest hour on film is probably the four punches he slips in a row up against the ropes. Of the guys I love of whom there is serious film...

    Vasquez and Marquez are underloved. They gave as three fights as good as any that have ever been staged. It's a saga as epic as Frazier-Ali, without question.


    Obvioulsy you should watch the whole video, doesn't matter how many times you see it, but for one moment, whip it on to 2:15. Vasquez gets stunned by a great left hook then dropped by a great right. He gets up. "He has 45 seconds to survive!" Instead, he brings ****ing war.

    He wasn't my "favorite fighter" (only one of), but:

    The badly faded, coke-ravaged Whitaker, realizing that his only chance against the prime Felix Trinidad was to test out that (at the time) suspect chin, tossed his safety first approach to the wind and flung himself at the world's most dangerous fighter with all guns blazing.

    He was hurt and floored several times but never stopped trying to exploit Trinidad's perceived weakness while at the same time disspelling the myth of a "weakness" many suspected that he himself had (a shaky chin).

    Amazing guts and determination were displayed in that fight.

    Seeing JMM suck-it-up after being all but run over by a truck in the first round of his first fight against Pacquiao to show the poise, skill 'n character for eleven more rounds to well earn his place among Mexican legends.

    Yes, that was absolutely amazing, brilliant theatre. And they say the fight game is dead, there are such astonishing ring feats this past decade, stuff that makes you want to cry.

    Yes. That was my favourite fight for about a year. It's that rarist of things, a fight that is better the second, third, fourth time around. When you can see the whole picture. You didn't realise quite what was happneing first time around, or how amazing it was.

    McG, may i ask you a question? How is it that your favourite fighter is a guy who you have barely seen fight? I know guys whose favourite fighter is Greb, a similar case to Burley, and i cant quite get my head around it. Of course theres documented evidence, paper clipping and word of mouth from the experts of the day/fellow fighters, but what is it that makes them a favourite of somebody? Im genuinely intrigued by this and would be grateful if you humoured me.

    JMM and Israel Vasquez were two of my favorite fights inn recent years. What warriors they are. I loved the baby faced Vasquez with his left-hook.These two are a throwback to Nelson-Walgost era gladiators....

    The same happened to me regarding that fight.

    And it also happened with my fav fighter's finest hour which was Duran beating Leonard in Montreal, first time i saw it i thought it was an overrated fight, the second time i saw it i thought it was great, by the third time i thought it was brilliant. It went from being an overrated fight at first glance to one of my top 5 fights after three or four views.

    Same reason you can like Abe Lincoln (whom we have no footage of) better than Richard Nixon or George Bush (both of whom we have tons of footage of);)
