like alexis arguello...he is the most famous fiter from Nicaragua.... there arent many others from that country:good
They won 2 gold at last years youth olympics and there 64kg fighter today was one of them, and they also got a silver today so they must be doing something wright.
Erm, Roman Gonzalez, Ricardo Mayorga, Juan Palacios, Rosendo Alvarez, Eddie Gazo and Arguello. It's not exactly a great number, but in no way comparable to Lithuania, a country which has never had a fighter even close to the level of Gazo, much less Arguello.
yeah get a life smart arse:-(... point i was trying 2 make was tat a non boxing nation like nicaragua can turn out arguello.. a hof boxer... so anything is possible:good
The ****? What are you getting so aggressive for? I was merely making the point that Nicaragua is hardly the greatest example as they have had a few good/very good fighters, don't see what your problem with that is.
well u made the patronising erm b4 ur post... i wasnt being aggressive just letting u no wat a **** u were being:rofl:good
Jpab you really are a mean ****, you just went too far with your previous post, your lucky im not reporting you to the mods:-(
They've had quite a few other title holders and title challengers in recent times. Luis Alberto Perez held the IBF Super-Flyweight and Bantamweight titles, before becoming the man Ricardo Cordoba would beat to gain his WBA (interim at the time) Super-Bantamweight title, which not very long later became Bernard Dunne's. Jose Alfaro held the WBA Lightweight title, he would later lose an interim WBC title fight to Antonio Demarco, and was the first of Erik Morales' comeback opponents (good little fight to watch too). Daniel Diaz fought Koki Kameda for his WBA Bantamweight title a few months ago. William Gonzalez gave a very good account of himself when he challenged Joseph Agbeko for his IBF Bantamweight title, losing a split decision. Was a cracking fight to watch btw. Evert Briceno has twice challenged for the WBO Super-Flyweight title, against Fernando Montiel and Omar Narvaez, and he went the distance with both of them, taking some rounds from them as well. Nerys Espinoza has fought for Light-Flyweight titles 3 times, once the WBA and twice the IBF, and he'll also be fighting an IBF eliminator in a couple of weeks time. Miguel Tellez fought Ivan Calderon for his WBO Minimumweight title a good few years back, although holds the embarrassing distinction of being one of the few guys featherfisted Calderon could stop. Marvin Aguilar fought Oscar Larios for the interim WBC Featherweight title. A boxrec check has also revealed/reminded me of a few more, Marlon Marquez, Carlos Rueda, Alvaro Perez, Gonzalo Munguia. On top of this two further champions in Adonis Rivas, WBO Super-Flyweight and interim WBO Flyweight champion, as well as Edurado Ray Marquez, who was WBO Minimumweight champion, he's the man Calderon beat to win the title. Being such a big fan of Jorge Arce I'm shocked I forgot Rivas. Arce battered Rivas twice in interim WBC Flyweight title defences. Expect Santos Benavides to be added to that list of (failed) title challengers in the near future. He's okay, but not quite up to World title standard, he is ranked by 3 of the sanctioning bodies though and quite highly by the WBA. So I think that's a nice little education for all of us on Nicaraguan boxing, I'm sure if you went trawling through records you'd find a good few more title holders and title challengers, but I'm not bothered to go beyond those I can think of and current active fighters. They are certainly no minnow when it comes to producing good fighters however, and after Panama, are the strongest for producing fighters in that central American region.
Anyone seen the film Knuckle ? Just watching it now, fairly intresting documentary about a feud between the Quinn-McDonaghs and Joe Wards family the Joyces .
Yep, I've covered the likes of Gonzalez, Perez and Briceno too in other threads I've made, Rueda too now that I think about it.
That Gary Sweeney is no joke! The fella who beat him today only lost to Joe Ward by a point last december. That would suggest sweeney aint that far off ward. This is also taking into consideration that sweeney is a year younger! Give him another year or 2 and he could ruffle the feathers of some of our top senior boxers!!
Sweeney isnt the greatest thecnical boxer or the fastest you will ever see but he is tough as they come and has tons of heart , with a bit more experiance and coaching in the high performance unit he will go a long way , the lad he was fighting was one of the best boxers in the tournament imo and it looked like he was going to blow Sweeney away but fair play to him he just kept walking forward throwing shots and the Russian didnt know what to do he ran out of ideas as he just couldnt stop Sweeney in his tracks no matter what he threw at him and he threw some amount of heavy leather into Sweeneys head and body .
