Exactly. And for three rounds he was basically allowed to pound Sharkey with his hardest, heavyweight-wrecking shots at will without fear of retaliation as Sharkey made the mistake of trying to box him ala Tommy Ryan (who was in his corner) and thus gave away the first three rounds ala Hagler vs Leonard. But that isn't on Boxrec so certain posters won't know much about that. Ah well...
I wonder if McCoy were allowed to pound Marciano for three rounds nonstop if he could have possibly floored him? Doesn't seem too outrageous to me. That 156 pound frame floored heavyweights before. I see no reason why he couldn't drop the Rock under the same circumstances that he managed to floor Sharkey.
Ryan messed things up for a couple of pressure fighters, by trying to turn them into slick boxers. He had Jim Jeffries trying to outbox Jim Corbett for 15 rounds, before Jeffries manager removed him, and said something like "your blowing it son, you have to force the fightand hit the body". Jeffries manager essentialy saved hit title by doing that.
Could you have a more predictable answer ? .. of no consequence, same fighter ... he was also over forty when he did it and half as fast ... the point is a middleweight did it ... seriously SQ..
If Choynski was a super middleweight at the time, and we do not know that he was,his weight fluctuated wildly, then Johnson himself was not much heavier, perhaps a couple of pounds. Ten months previously he had scaled 168lbs for a match with Jim McCormick To give comparisons, Jimmy Ellis was kod by a middleweight,[Ruben Carter]. Sam Langford was stopped by welterweight Young Peter Jackson. Frank Childs was stopped by welterweight Joe Walcott, when defending his coloured heavyweight title. Archie Moore was stopped and floored 5 times by super middleweight Eddie Booker. You have to factor in the circumstances, the degree of professional and ,physical developement each individual had made at that point in his career, and put them into context. Unless of course, [ GOD FORBID,] one has an agenda.
MCvey, I was not asking you the question, so stop with the defensive midned agenda. The question was give to SonnyListonsjab. The weight you are gave was from a 1900 fight. Choysnki Ko'd Johnson in 1901 ( weight unkown ), and by 1902 Johnson's listed weight in the Gardner fight was 185 pounds. If you wanted to be fair minded you list it this way. Bottom line Johnson was KO'd by a smaller man via a one punch Ko early in the fight. Johnson had at least 24 fights under his belt. In addition, the fight took place in his home town. Choysnki had to travel.
You posted on an open forum, the question can therefore be debated by anyone. Fact is 10months before he was stopped by Choynski ,Johnson scaled 168lbs or to put it another way ,[according to a recent post of yours concerning Johnson v O Brien], 37 lbs below his optimum weight. Bottom line many great fighters have been kod by smaller men in the developing stages of their careers as I have proved by giving examples , Johnson and ,Choynski's weight differential was negligible ,stop wriggling. Johnson in 1904 below This content is protected Johnson in 1905 This content is protected Aboves is Johnson in 1905 he scaled around 190lbs at this time In 1900, 10months before he fought Choynski he scaled 168lbs for a fight. Contrast Johnson's frame in these pics with that he has in 1910, below. This content is protected Jack scaled 208lbs for Jeffries and stated he was in the shape of his life Then remember that Johnson fought Choynski a decade earlier.1900.
Sailor Tom would hang in tough for a while, but Marciano's defense would make the difference as against Rex Layne.
I agree with the below quote: Layne was a straight-up mauler with a decent right hand. He may not have trained as intensely as the sailor, but he was a little bigger. The problem was that much like Tom Sharkey, he was not particularly elusive and ate a lot more leather than he was able to connect with against Marciano.
