Would it work in modern day boxing? Seriously considering on trying to teach myself this technique and training it to become effective.

It's risky. I think you're better off polishing or learning other techniques.

I've never heard of the Depsey Roll. :?

However, the Dempsey Roll is a quick series of bobs, weaves, and hooks.

It's just a crouch/bobbing and weaving style to get into range and technically Dempsey wasn't the best. Better examples are Tyson/Patterson - hard to perfect and demanding. If you want to copy a fighters crouch go for Henry Armstrong

You only really used it if you're shorter than your opposition (that's what it's used for to get inside taller opposition, if your taller it gives up your height). The important thing about bobbing and weaving is to watch your opponents movements to sway away from their punches, if they read your rythm they'll time you

Get to a boxing gym and learn the basics first though

like any technique, if used properly it can be very effective. but like everybody has just said, it's risky.
