Someone with byrd's power, imo, has to score a knockdown to have a 10-8 round.

 

Golota v Ruiz
1: 9-10 good round for ruiz who swarms golota making him look quite useless. never hurting the big man but nullifying his attack totally.
2: 10-7 beautiful first kd for golota with a counter right, 2nd looks a bit dubious but the ref calls it.
3: 10-9 very scrappy close round, better punches seemed to come from golota.
4: 10-9 horrible round to watch with again the better work coming from andrew.
5: 9-10 ruiz spoils all of golota's attack landing some decent clean shots.
6: 10-9 again ruiz tries to nullify golota's attack but ships a couple of decent shots.
7: 9-10 another close round but ruiz landed some good body shots and spoiled most of golota's work.
8: 10-9 golota out strengths ruiz when he tries clinching and still gets his shots off.
9: 9-10 good work by ruiz who goes back to swarm rather than hug and gets some nice shots in.
10: 10-8 ruiz was fighting good this round but not enough to negate a kd.
11: 10-9 golota fighting well behind the jab catching ruiz when he comes in to hug.
12: 9-10 good last round by ruiz who lands some good inside shots and some good counter shots on golota.
115-110

 

Froch v Dirrell

1: 9-10 good round for andre, standing his ground in the centre and outjabbing Froch for the majority of the round.
2: 9-10 another tactical round much closer but the clean shots came from andre with a great double counter left hook.
3: 9-10 tough round to score, froch's agression wasn't effective but Dirrell's defence was overly negative. Froch was clearly the ring general but the emphasis is on clean effective punches and it's undoubted who landed the more of those.
4: 10-9 much better by froch who starts to actually defend with something other than his chin.
5: 9-10 dirrell goes back to countering froch's shots with greater effectiveness thus landing better punches throughout the fight.
6: 10-9 much better round for Froch, setting his attack up behind the jab and cutting the ring off much better.
7: 10-9 Froch closes the distance with some good inside work completely taking dirrell out of his comfort zone and probably just edges the shot count with a clear advantage from being the ring general.
8: 10-9 close round, both land big shots on each other but the inside work is much more even. Froch gets the nod for ring generalship.
9: 9-10 much better round byr dirrell who barely takes a punch in the first 2 minutes whilst landing some solid hard counter shots.
10: 9-9 dirrell outboxes and outpunches froch with crisp accurate shots, more willing to trade now. loses a point for clinching or headbutting, not sure.
11: 9-10 andre again lans really good clean shots and looks a class above froch at this point.
12: 9-10 closer round, but again the better work is coming from andre.

112-115

 

Toney v Johnson

1: 10-9 close round but Toney fights well behind the jab landing some nice counter hooks and inside uppercuts.
2: 8-10 big start to the round by johnson with a good solid knockdown. toney finishes the round decently though.
3: 10-9 another close round with two slippery slicksters defending really well. Toney fights slightly better behind the jab and edges it for me.
4: 10-9 good round for toney boxing behind his jab landing some big hooks on reggie.
5: 9-10 good round from johnson who picks off some very nice clean shots.
6: 10-9 good close tactical round with toney getting the nod due to better shots coming from him.
7: 9-10 strong finish by toney but reggie controlled the action for the most part behind his jab.
8: 10-9 good round for toney who lands some big shots on johnson.
9: 10-9 very good round with great counter punching exchanges from both men, toney's shots slightly harder.
10: 9-10 more cautious round that seemed to be fought at johnson's pace as he landed some beautiful shots.
11: 9-10 johnson just edges the round with some great defence.
12: 10-9 good finish by toney who matches johnson's defence with some very accurate shots.

114-113

note - this was such a close fight on a round by round basis, a lot of the rounds had very little in them. very underrated fight.

toney v mccallum 1

1: 9-10 the body snatcher jabs his way to an early round.
2: 10-9 much better by toney who opens up and lands some good shots making mike miss and look clumsy.
3: 9-10 close round with the edge just going to mike who dictated large parts of the round on the outside.
4: 10-9 mike's jabbing on the outside doesn't have the same effect as james makes him miss and nails him with counter hooks.
5: 10-9 toney defending superbly this round seeming to control the pace to his liking.
6: 9-10 brilliant boxing by mike who picks and times his shots beautifully this round.
7: 10-9 great defence and reflexes by toney this round who picks off a lot of counter shots after making mike miss.
8: 9-10 hotly contested round with some great body work coming from mike, toney lands a great combo about the 2 minute mark but loses the round.
9: 9-10 brilliant round that was very even, mike's ring generalship just gives him the edge as they both landed clean effective shots.
10: 10-9 toney neutralises mike's attack this round whacking him with some hard counters throughout.
11: 10-9 another great defensive display by toney who is doing a great "hit and don't be hit" display.
12: 10-9 huge finish by toney who really hurts mike with some massive counters but mike's chin holds up to the punishment.

Sergei took the first the 7 rounds, on the offensive, out-jabbing & out-fighting the bigger man, pressing forward & working the body to grind him down, & landing some decent hooks up close. However, Liakhovich suffered a broken nose quite early.

 

Payao Poonterat Vs Jiro Watanabe I

Poonterat: 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8;

Watanabe: 9; 10; 11; 12

Watanabe was stripped for taking on Poonterat in a unification bout rather than his countryman Khaosai, who wasn't much at the time anyway.

1-3; Watanabe trying jut to snatch rounds. The Thai is getting the better of it with his well-timed counters.

4-6; much of the same. Poonterat is a straight-up fighter, not a bad counter puncher at all, not your usual awkward Muay Thai convert as he made the change quickly and won Olympic Bronze at Montreal. Whenever Watanabe actually tries to up his game, his fellow titlist does the better work. Nothing mind-blowing from the Thai, Jiro just isn't doing enough. Really lackidaisical, even for him.

7-9; in the 9th Watanabe gets going, timing his right hook well and buzzing Poonterat briefly late and following up his assault to take the round.

10&11; Watanabe starting to boss it now, landing stiff and sharp counters and doing the much better work.

12; Both men come out and give it their all and there is some great action in this round, with both men countering well in the pocket. But it's the Jap' that does the most damage, landing more shots with more authority.

I've just watched the Vasquez/Marquez trilogy for the 1st time & an absolutly superb trio of battles. I've had the disk for about 18 months & never got around to watching it. I never score fights 1st time i watch then as i get to engrossed in the action so with regard to the 3rd fight which was most definetly a contender for fight of the year (Maybe was?) alongside Cotto/Margo. It was an SD 114/111, 111/114, 113/112 for Vasquez & an incredible last round with Marquez getting a standing count with 12 seconds left. Has anyone else seen this epic & disagreed with the final scoring.

I'am lucky enough to have the dual signed poster as well which i'll now keep.

Vasquez-Marquez III was indeed fight of the year in '08. Deservedly so, too. :good

Final round was very reminiscent of Chacon-Limon IV (Marquez didn't hit the canvas completely like Limon, but most certainly would have were it not for the ropes.) And it sealed the deal on most people's cards at the time. Not too much debate about the official decision, either. Most people agreed it was close, but that Vasquez's late rush was enough for him to get the nod.
