Many say it was a hail mary shot. I personally think it was perfectly timed. Regardless if the shot was lucky or not I think McCallum would have beaten him anyways either by late TKO or close decision.

It was a classic setup, cleanup shot IMO...Curry was retreating with his feet squared facing McCallum and Mike simply let fly with a classic left hook...end of story...nothing lucky at all about it.

Ray Leonard was at ringside commentating that fight. He was not impressed with the way McCallum was standing directly in front of Curry, taking shots and not giving angles. I myself don't think it was a lucky punch. McCallum had power in that arm, was a natural 154 pounder, and cought Curry right on the button as Donald missed that last shot leaving himself wide open. Curry was not especially great at taking it either. Is it something that I would anticipate McCallum doing in multiple meetings with Curry? No. But it was a legitimate punch that was well executed.

good post. curry was open to the punch for a lot of that fight, he relied way too much on speed and reflexes for his defense and he often neglected a high guard. because he was SO much faster than mccallum it took brilliant timing and anticipation to execute it, but mike did.

Lucky punch. McCallum was on his way to getting knocked out obviously.

It was one of the classiest, most clean-cut counter left hooks I've ever seen.

Great punch, a little luck involved and a tactical mistake or lack of focus on Curry's part. McCallum was setting him up no doubt but he set everyone up that way, by going to the body and then switching to the head. Curry never saw it coming.

beautiful shot by Mccallum, but Curry was boxing very well up to the stoppage and was starting to build up a lead on the cards.

I think McCallum said he faked to the body first or something.

McCall-Lewis was a perfect set up shot to, although some think he just landed a lucky punch.

I agree. Curry must have felt too comfortable with his clear speed advantage. A bit surprising that he swallowed it hook, lead and sinker like that, but still a beatiful move by one of the most masterful boxers of all time. I would really have liked to see a rematch.
