McClellan is overrated. He had no defense and doesn't have the resume to match his reputation. Like all punchers, people overstate his ability to get to a boxer. They had to match him very carefully against other sluggers — Benn was perceived as slipping and was chosen as a relatively easy mark — in the buildup to a mega-PPV against Roy Jones, who'd have destroyed McClellan. All the best to Gerald, but Dirrell has a good chance to win a wide decision against him. He'd face a lot of danger in the early rounds and there would be a tense moments, but AD is a more complete fighter.
Yes, I am amazed that a few people in here have been able to convince a hoard of newbs that Mcclellan was some great fighter.... He was the Allen Green / Jeff Lacy of that time. But then again... Had Green had a career stopping injury before joining S6 or Lacy after losing to Calzaghe... then some people in 20 years will be convinced that Green was a monster or Lacy was a monster who beat Reid and Pemberton...
You know who Audley Harrison beat in the amateus? You know that Brahmer beat Bute in the Amateurs? and so on...
That means absolutely nothing for what would happen in the pros. Should we conclude anything from the amateur matchups between Tyson/Tillman or Lewis/Biggs?
Hahaha like Dirrell is some masterful boxer yeah? He barely outboxed Carl Froch and did no better than the 'Caveman' against common foe Arthur Abraham. He's not a terrific boxer at all. And it's not like saying the GMan would stop Mike McCallum or something, it's merely saying he would stop a guy who has shown some deficincies in the punch resistance apartment and stamina department. Alfonso Rocha and Arthur Abraham both had the kid on shaky legs (dropped him too) so why wouldn't the much, much better Mclellan do the same thing at the very least?
Bute wouldn't, no chance. Kessler and Froch have the chin to do it, no doubt about that. Ward could probably pull it off too if he stayed out of harms way (which he could). I wouldn't argue about any of Kessler, Ward or Froch besting the G Man. But Dirrell and Bute would get their clocks cleaned. Neither have the chin, stamina, or defense to last against a guy who hit as hard, or was as relentless as Mclellan. The pair of them would get knocked out IMO.
You had no point. What happens in the AMs is irrelevant. And Roy went, what, 14 years getting knocked down only once? One of the following must be true: 1) Jones was a superhuman who never got hit 2) Jones did get hit occasionally, and his chin held up Either way, your criticisms fail.
What makes you so certain McClellan was better than Abraham? I suspect he was, too, but Taylor/McClellan would be a good fight. Froch has a sturdy chin and is better than anyone G-Man ever beat. Dirrell boxed Froch evenly and has the elusiveness to weather the early assault, then peck his way to a decision win.
his reflexes meant he was rarely hit...that and the fact he fought many cab drivers and mexican roadsweepers.
