    40 have tried with varying degrees of success, 1 arguably succeeded once and failed on another occasion, leaving 39 defeated once and 40 defeated overall with 1 subjective "event" victory making this equal to the equation:

    39 + 1JLCX2tries/1clear/1controversialdecisionloss + 1 judges score card for Oscar - 1 judges score card for being stupid=41 something.
