So did I. In the Liston era he was a good defensive fighter. Still Ali's should never be considered a great defensive fighter unless the ability to withstand earth shaking shots some how counts as defense.

    1. Whitaker

    2. Benitez

    3. Pep

    4. Toney (at his peak)

    5. Mayweather

Worth to mention: Roberto Duran, Hopkins, Jones and Ali (though they relied on reflexes)

Order of time.....Of Course there is Pep. Don't forget in one of the four fights against that Giant Saddler, Willi was leading until he broke his arm. And he was never the same man after breaking his back in that airplane crash.

I'm not going to say who's best.

Atteil-Kibane Both held the Feather title for 11years...back to back.

Joe Gans perhaps the best before Pep, but with pop in his fists. Had to throw a fight or two....not being white.
    Joe Walcott, the original
Bennie Lenard Lt. Weight and Britton Welter

Slappsy Maxi Rosenbloom. Who went in the ring to have fun...only went in once to KO some loud mouth....did it....Had to be good defensively, in he didn't want to hurt any one. @299 fights.
Didn't drink nor smoke trained by dancing till five in the morning...and fighting every other week or three. 4 Years One and Only Lt. Heavy Champ.

    Jaffra?

Robinson dodged.Bevins and that other guy Holbrook????

Bones Brown....not an all time great....just managed to stay Lightweight Champ for six years with no pop in his fist.

Curtis Cokes master of the flea flicker and getting out of Dodge.

Perhaps not the same level as the above but good on defense none were of course the One and Only like the Above.....
Starling and Breyland were pretty good too.
    Melddrick Taylor

Where do you list a Billy Conn?????

AT his peak (against Barkley), James Toney had a better defense than Floyd.I mean, Floyd just has always tried to emulate Toney in the defense department.

Hopkins is short of the top 5 in my mind.
