I know it's your thread, but you really should have put Bernard in your poll.

With his lack of real physical gifts and athleticism, how many times have you actually seen him hurt badly or in trouble? How many times have you seen him outsmarted in the ring? The fact that in his third phase of his career, his old ass is whippin up on some legit young champions has more to do with his technical ability and IQ than anything else.

He is absolutely the smartest guy I have seen in the ring. It doesn't matter how uch you like the style, it's effective, and takes a hell of a Ring IQ to pull off.

I can't agree. Ray is smart but not the smartest on the list. The 1st fight with Duran still bugs me till this day. I get the fact that he was trying to prove that he could beat Duran at his own game but still, by the later rounds I'm sure he realized that **** wasn't working. He should have quit bullshittin' and got back to doing what he does best. Which is the style that made Duran quit in the 2nd fight.

Ray normally didn't fight like he did in the rematch though. It just shows his versatility to fight the way he did in the Duran rematch (and Hagler) in such a fleet-footed manner.

Fighting the way he did in Montreal really wasn't that out of character for Leonard, he was just in there with a different opponent than he was used to.

I agree that he should've figured it out by the mid-rounds to do something different, but easier said than done. I was pretty impressed with how he finished strong after taking a hammering to the body.

Ali. His game plan against Foreman is arguably the greatest game plan of all time. Also he was able to defeat Frazier 2 out of 3. In the first fight Ali understood that he wasn't the same fighter. He handspeed and reflexes weren't the same. He was able to adapt. So out of that list I would pick Ali.

Not that I would pick Roy, but he had an underrated Ring IQ (and technical soundness as well.)

Boxers could never succeed like that on athleticism alone.
