I'm curious what you're basing this statement on?

 

There is a great spectrum of ability within the pressure style you describe. The gulf between what we see of Marciano on film and what we see of Johnson's contemporaries is enormous. Marciano had excellent ability to cutdown distance with taking the least amount of punishment. Watch that Flynn footage where he literally runs straight toward Johnson and buries his head in Johnson's torso like a 4 year old wrestling with daddy. It's below amateurish. Marciano also made himself a smaller target versus larger foes. Those silly mustache-twirlers rear back, chin out, at full extension even though the mammoth 6 foot 1 inch Johnson is a full head taller.

If you really want to defend Johnson's calibre of opponents, I would hunt down all existing footage of boxing from that era and destroy it.

 

Au contraire, i'd say Tommy Burns looks kinda mobile and good here. I think he was a pretty good fighter.

Good call McVey, there are people who think Tiger Ted beat Marciano more convincingly than Ezzard Charles. Marciano was awarded the decision in both fights.

 

Who argues that Charles beat Marciano?

 

Its there in the footage if you look beyond the highlights.

 

What? no way. Ketchell would have knocked burns out cold early, I can only imagine what Marciano would have done to him.

Marciano looks far more polished in his crouch bobbing, weaving, slipping, ducking than the wipe open, low gaurd, arms flailing tommy burns. If we compare their punching technique, Marciano rotating his torso for leverage blows tommy away by a country mile.

 

Burns looks better on film than Ketchel by far.

 

What film of a prime Stanley Ketchel have you seen? None

If you compare common opposition between Burns and Ketchel, the comparison isn't even close. Ketchel was leagues better both as a fighter and as a puncher.


Ketchel would look like a million bucks too if he was fighting those D level ham and eggers on film we saw Burns flattening.


Stanley Ketchel KO 2 Tommy Burns both in primes. Burns come forward style was made for a slugger like Stanley.

 

Marciano was a marvellous example of a man maximising his abilities and ,through sheer will , dedication,and, determination overacheiving, what he was not was polished.

 

Burns does not pass the eye test because he beats on a bunch of D level tomato cans who wouldn't have lasted 10 seconds against Stanley Ketchel

 

Come on now.

If some middleweight today iced Dereck Chisora, we would not dismiss the acomplishment just because Chisora was a commonwealth grade heavyweight.

Burns punching form on film is exceptional.

 

We are not debating how good Burns was realative to Ketchel head to head.

We are debating how good he looks on film.
