How many are there now? 5? and 17 divisions so thats 85 world Champions atsch It seems that any fighter with a mediocre fight record can fight for a world title nowadays would it not make more sense to have 1 major title belt in each division and perhaps 1 lesser belt ?
Lets see.. IBO WBO WBA Regular WBA Super WBA Interim WBC WBC Interim WBC Emeritus WBC Silver IBF So 170 Champions at a time is possible. lol
WBC most def has the most rightful champions of all the organizations (Vitali, BHop, Froch, Martinez, Kessler), but still has a long way to go for it to be as good as one expect from a sport like boxing. WBA is just a sad mess and a joke now, and the IBF should put more pressure on their champions to face quality opponents (Bute constantly ducking the top guys). There should be good opportunities for the WBO and others if they can step it up and get some good structure and framework.
I wonder just how much the organizations are worth. Imagine buying them and forcing the "champions" to fight each other.
They should just change the system to Karate belts, that way everyone can have a belt no matter what level you are at.
There's a lot more than the few mentioned so far. Counting all the mid-level and regional title belts world wide you probably have literally HUNDREDS of belt holders out there.
