As far as I remember mate Fury's da is born and raised in England, I don't think there's any Irish in him but he did at one stage carry an innacurate nickname referencing Tuam at one stage. As for the musical Fury's - travellers correct but again a little known fact they are also of Romany gypsy origin as distinct to Irish travellers.
Byrne kinda reminds me of this fella. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEz5GfZUnBU&feature=player_detailpage[/ame]
Yeah it's from the same guys who do eastbound and down and pinapple express and its still unsure if they'll make it a comedy or a gritty drama But it's expected to be dark comedy.
For the record, the band are "The Fureys", not "The Furys". Spelt different to Tyson. I don't know if this makes a difference though. Someone said there are many with this surname in Galway. I wonder which spelling it is though:think I never knew the band had any traveller link. This song is an absolute gem!!!! :good [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z265BuKCQrc[/ame]
If you ask me it's quite good in boxing circles. Travellers and common folk are often the best of friends. It's not the same with regards the general public though. A lot of discrimination; much of it is justified. It's an awkward relationship to tell the truth. I made many traveller friends through boxing over the years and my mam often taught their parents (she's an adult literacy teacher). But at the same time, working in a pub for 3 years i've yet to serve a traveller. Must have refused 10 or 12 in that time. Seems hypocritica,l but it's more of an obligation than anything else, because the regulars would be moaning if i was serving them
it as to do with his lack of action than the wbu slap- not a wbu fan at all- but they are unser going a revamp as far as i am aware- i am getting mails from there press people for the last week, but again it ws more to do with inactivety- and a slow media day with no irish lads firguring in transfers
Better than it was when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. For one, most people I know refer to them as travellers, a far cry from what they were once called. They are a pretty small minority, really, and really over-represented in terms of boxing. Many are settled now. In fact, my mam's family is from outside of Tuam in Galway, and last I was there, the mayor was a member of the travelling community. They are not ****ing gypsies as I've seen written here; they are pure ****ing Irish; there's no ethnic difference. I do remember living in a town called Glenamaddy in Galway as a kid when some travellers rolled into town with their caravans. The men of the town turned out to stop them, and a riot broke out, with the travellers getting the worst of it by far. Sure, there's good and bad in all groups. I would recommend a filum called Into the West with Gabriel Byrne if you want to get an idea of the traveling community back in the day.
As for the Fureys, their recording, any of them, of "the lonesome boatman" is about as good as Irish music gets.
Like some of the lads said there are some bad apples within the travelling community and some complete gems I have met both none within the boxing community, I went to school with a couple and grew up with them and I was treated better by their parents than some of my own family. I have also been robbed by travelers got into multiple fights with them. This also goes for settled folk. In my opinion the Traveling community are raw Irish they are the Irish you see being depicted in movies where they get drunk and beat they the living **** out of each other. And for the most part that is the traveling community and that is why the general public in Ireland alot of people who forget their roots and where they came from have nothing but bad things to say about them. And gypies are a different breed they are a shower of ****s.
You should never compare the two to say both are settled travellers. the Caseys in Limerick are far from settled and are considered one of the reasons Limerick have a bad name,as for Andy his Father is a settled traveller who came home from London 15-20 years ago. Also you say the place is full of travellers when Andy fights in Limerick---this is also utter shite as ive been to every Andy Lee fight in Limerick and the only time i saw a bigger than normal amount of knacks is when Willie Casey first fought in UL on Andys undercard. Difference between the two--Andy is a through gentelman, where Willie and his lot are a shower of -----s
When has Willie Casey ever been anything but a gentleman? Whatever about some of his family, Willie is a great example to kids in Limerick.
