Was Trinidad Overrated?

If Robinson had no skills he would be crap.

 

No, Tito was not slick nor overly impressive in the handspeed department. Moreover, as you so astutely mentioned, his footwork and defense were not exactly textbook.

Nevertheless he was a good though not great champion. Incidentally the "slick" thing is overrated.

Chavez was certainly not slick, but he was a tough, resourceful motherf'cker in that ring.

 

Like what?......Tito is actually the more diverse fighter between himself and Tyson, and Tyson like Tito got dominated in his losses so what gives.

 

I think h is slightly overrated . . . only slightly. Oscar was beating him in that fight (oscar decided to run and the rest is history) but his biggest win on his resume was Pernell. Pernell was on cocaine and clearly was not the same fighter. He was the first person to clearly beat the p4p ATG but it should have a huge astrix by it.

Was he a well rounded fighter . . . no, but he did what it took to win and beat some solid fighters.

Trinidad had very good handspeed,jab,right cross and could box off the back foot before he fell in love with his power.

 

He had more of an arsenal than just a left hook, and he could box, he was only outboxed by the purest boxers of that era. He never had the need to turn a fight into a chess match, He had great timing, great accuracy with devastating punching power. Actually the last time he looked like more of a boxer was against mayorga.

Just because an attribute of a fighter is not immediately thought of by the casual or even hardcore boxing fan doesn't mean the fighter didn't possess it.....Sugar Ray Leonard had very good punching power but its not the first thing one associates with him when they immediately think of his attributes.
