Dempsey's wife said a lot of things and was regarded as almost completely unreliable. If we believe her in regards to this then we must also believe that Dempsey's early round rushes were the result of him being hopped up on cocaine which she also stated.
K,a few points. When we or I judge a fighters ability, against other fighters we are talking about their darned primes. Nothing else, nothing more . What Dempsey as a young hobo, riding the rods, did before hooking up with Jack Kearns is irrelevant to me. What he did from 1917 to 1923, is the real Jack Dempsey,we should be talking about. When he matured and developed his bobbing and weaving style, under the guidance of Jack Kearns is the Jack Dempsey of historical importance. Why bring up Terry Keller, unless to weaken his true prime ability ? Tain't fair I think.. When we rate the wonderful ability of Jersey Joe Walcott, we never bring up the fact inept Abe Simon kod Walcott in 1940. He hit his peak later on when he became the true Jersey Joe Wacott we now appreciate. Last points : Yes I saw Harold Green many, many times prior and after his kayo of Joey Giardello. Harold Green was a good earnest brawler, but devoid in punching power. But he pulverized Giardello, with one left-hook. In 1947,when Green was at his peak,Marcel Cerdan kod Harold Green in 2 rounds. But we don't and SHOULD NOT diminish,Joey Giardello's well founded reputation...And so with the peak Jack Dempsey....Fair is fair... Last point- Yes Klompton ,Rocky Graziano is a HERO of mine. He was the most viscerally exciting digitalis fighter ,I have ever seen, when he was young, before the 3 fight trilogy took everything out of him and Tony Zale, also, I might add. But did you ever hear me say I regarded Rocky as a great all-time fighter ? NEVER,have I implied that. So why bring up Graziano, unless you want to somehow tarnish me ? I feel fortunate to have seen Graziano, young, tough and a murderous right-hand puncher flatten Billy Arnold, and many others. Yes K, after Graziano died, Harold Green in an article in the Ring magazine claimed to have taken "a dive" in 1945 MSG. I was there at that fight, and after Green, dropped on his back took a 10 count and immediately jumped to his feet, and he and his handlers went after the referee, claiming Green beat the count...Who really Knows ? Cheers...
Double talk. You are trying to rewrite history to make Dempsey seem more than human while stating that its wrong to hold his formative years against him. I agree with the latter, he was still developing in 1917 which is why its easy to see how he could get KNOCKED OUT COLD by Jim Flynn. As for Green, I have the film Burt. He wasnt on his back. He was on his knees and he and his handlers didnt rush the ref. It was just Green, crying, and he was held back by his handlers who rushed into the ring when he tried to go after Graziano. Ive seen him flatten Arnold as well, Ive also seen him lose to Green and struggle with Sonny Horne. You can try and pull rank and age on me but that only goes so far in the digital age.
Who the hell thought i would get into this haggling,by just posting a thread for ESB to read an article about Dempsey/Flynn fight. An unexpected battle and I don't even have my mouthpiece in place. You are berating me for saying" Green was on his back until the 10 count ",and he and his handlers rushed the referee. And you say Green was on his knees, and his handlers rushed the referee. SO WHAT K. It is SIXTY SIX years ago,I was at that fight, and if I forget every little nuance of the knockout, I remember the end result. You who have the film, cannot deny that Graziano stopped Green in the 3rd round. I am damn proud that I can still recall the ko I saw in 1945. Damn Proud... Klompton, you are a mean guy. Who the hell is trying to pull my age and "rank" on you ? My life and age is winding up, and you may or may not have films of Graziano, Green, Sonny Horne, fights ,but I am darned proud to have seen these fights RINGSIDE, and yes I am darned proud of my age and the fact, that I can recall these events, after so many decades. Pulling RANK, B.S.
**** happens, even great fighters get caught cold sometimes. Duodenum posted a few other examples too. I admit though it is a tad suspicious.
Just like you were at ringside for a completely unknown, unreported fight between the most popular fighter in the USA arguably and one of his top contenders? :-(
"From the minute the bell clanged,I knew I was in trouble.I had made the mistake of not warming up properly. What a dumb oversight on my part_ it was probably going to cost me the fight! I should have shadow boxed in the back room! I should have done this ,and I should have done that! I kept berating myselfwhen Bam!down I went. I barely managed to get up when crack!-down again. I got floored a few times and the worst part of it was that I knew it was my own fault! I was just about getting my second wind ,when Bernie threw the towel in." Jack Dempsey, from the autobiography " Dempsey".
Your DAMN right, I saw Ray Robinson, and Bobby Dykes fight a ten round non-title fight at the Coney Island Veledrome in NY in the early 1950s. Why the hell woud I post a thread asking for help in the record books, about a fight I HADN'T SEEN.? I am sure it was their second bout,as their first bout I had seen on TV,from Chicago in 1950...Why would I even ask for assistance for a fight [a dull one],that I had never seen ? :hi: P.S. And it wasn't Billy Brown who lost to Robinson in NY 1950. This guy was the tall Bobby Dykes I saw, contrary what you think...Why the hell would I wrack my brains, for help from various boxing sources for a fight I NEVER SAW.? You sure like to rub it in,don't you ?
Hahahahaaaaaaaahhhhahahaa what a hilarious turn off events?!! I drop in one comment exposing klomptons major chip on the shoulder and look what happens when I'm gone?!! Didn't surprise me that you'd show your face in this one too hahaha - are you and klompton the same person? I've never known any two people to get so vehemently angry and aggressive over a fighter?? Unbeleivable hatred
Dempsey had been knocked down 9 times in the first round by a middleweight previously and was knocked down by the first punch Firpo threw because of his rushing tactics. An experienced battler like Flynn could take advantage of it. I'm not saying I discount the possibility of a dive on Dempsey's part because that's reality in boxing but so far there has been no definite proof either way. It's easy to say on hindsight that it must have been a dive because of the difference in class but at the time Flynn was probably the best opponent Dempsey had ever faced. Even 4 years later Flynn was able to come up with a victory over Sully Montgomery who went onto have a decent heavyweight career so you can't discount that the same thing could have happened to Dempsey.
bert sugar stated that dempsey hadn't had anything to eat for four days before the flynn ko loss. take what you will from that.
it was probably fixed but it funny how guys like dempsey, pep, and lamotta almost get respect for throwing a fight. it's overlooked when judging their careers. can you imagine if this were jones or mayweather today? just sayin'.
